Rice Cemetery

Daingerfield

LOCATION:  Located east of Daingerfield.  From US 259 near the courthouse, travel east on Hwy 130 for 1 mile.  Turn right onto CR 4108 for 1 mile and turn right again onto CR 2112.  The cemetery is on the right at .9 mile and 150 yards into the woods.  This is private property with a locked gate.  Get permission before entering.

This cemetery is located in the David T. King Survey and was owned by David King until he sold it to Levy M. Rice.  King had been clerk for Bethlehem Baptist Church of Daingerfield.  Levy M. Rice was married to Elizabeth Collom, a sister of George Collom who was among a large group who obtained Mexican land grants in the 1820s.  Collin McKinney later moved to Fannin County.  Levy Rice became the clerk for the Land Commissioners Board of Bowie County.  He may have been in the Mexican War of 1846.  There are three marked graves in this cemetery and evidence of several others.  A son of Levy Rice may have been the first here.

This cemetery is known to be predominantly white.

This cemetery was first surveyed by Jim and Linda McCain Stansell.  It was surveyed again by Roy Broussard, Gerald Hammock and Charles Steger on Jan 28, 1999.

Thanks to David L. Rice of Texarkana for some extra historical data on the Levi Melvin Rice family.
