Mrs. McBride passed away April 13th, 2009 on Monday afternoon in Brownwood.

Mrs. McBride was born November 9, 1910, the sixth child of William Anderson and Mary Lillian (Martin) Weldon of Mercury,Texas.

Kathryn McBride, her daughter, had been living with Gay Nell and managing day to day activities so, Gay Nell would have freedom to ranch.

At the age of six Gay Nell began her ranching career with her father on their ranch near Mercury, Texas. Gay Nell loved ranching and found it challenging in that ranch work was different every day. When interviewed in 2000 by the San Saba News, she was asked if she thought of retiring, Gay Nell replied "No, I don't know where to turn loose."

In 1927, Gay Nell married Bert McBride, the son of John and Minnie Gordon McBride. Gay Nell and Bert combined their love of ranching endeavors with her mother on the family ranch. In 1943, the couple and their daughters, Katheryn and Gloria moved to their separate ranch in the Sloan Community. Gay Nell was very active in her community. She was a member of Sloan Community Presbyterian Church and the first woman on the Richland Springs School Board. In 1970 Bert and Gay Nell moved to Brownwood. This move did not stop their love of ranching, only the location. They drove daily to operate their ranch in the Holt Community and Mercury area where they also leased Weldon family land. After Bert's death in 1985, Gay Nell continued ranching until 2008 with the assistance of Joe Flores.

Gay Nell was preceded in death by her husband, Bert C. McBride; brother, Clarence; four sisters, Valeria Allen Smith; Mariella Cawyer McLinden; Edith Bushnick Walker; and Ima Cooper.

Gay Nell is survived by one sister, Doris Stokes of Duncan, Oklahoma; two daughters, Katheryn McBride of Brownwood; and Gloria Leslie and her husband, Gilbert Leslie of California; granddaughters, Lynn Leslie; Dina Wilson and her husband, Bill Wilson, all of California; also her sister-in-law, Opal McBride and family.
