WWII Veterans Monuments

5 WWII Monuments.jpg

(There are 5 double faced monuments displaying the names of 800+ names of Llano County WWII Veterans. All are in alphabetical order, except the last 9 names, and it is assumed that they were discovered too late to engrave in proper order so they were added later at end. Also note that those names with an (*) by them are from old original monument that preceded this one. Monument was dedicated May 29, 2004.)

Monument reads: “Dedicated to those who died in service as well as the veterans who returned home to the families that suffered and to the nation that now finds time to remember. Erected by American Legion Frank Griggs Post 370 and Ladies Auxiliary.

Korea – June 25, 1950 – January 31, 1955 – Medal of Honor Whitt Lloyd Moreland – Awarded January 5, 1951, U.S. Marine Corps – Korean War – March 7, 1930 – May 28, 1951

Vietnam – Dec. 22, 1961 - May 7, 1975 - CPL Michael D. Bird - US Army

Whitt Lloyd Moreland was a true hero, in every sense of the word.  Please note: from the Korean War Veterans Honor Roll located on Ancestry.com, comes the following additional data on Whitt Lloyd Moreland.

“Private First Class Moreland was a member of Headquarters and Service Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division. He was on special assignment as intelligence scout to Company C. On May 29, 1951 near Kwagch'i-Gong, Korea, he accompanied a rifle platoon in an assault on an enemy fortified position. His unit came under a volley of hand grenades. He managed to dispose of several by kicking them away, but slipped and fell. To protect his comrades, he covered the final grenade with his body. For his leadership and great valor, Private First Class Moreland was awarded the Medal of Honor, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.”

It is the VETERAN  not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the VETERAN  not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the
VETERAN, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the
VETERANnot the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble.

It is the
VETERAN,   not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the
VETERAN  not the politician, who has given us the right to vote.

It is the VETERAN who salutes the Flag – even though he can no longer stand.

And it is the VETERAN who serves under the Flag – even though he now may lie under that Flag.
