Genealogy Notes
John H. Young and Jimima Anna Watson
were married in Gillespie County,
Texas, on January 13,
1868. They moved to the west part of Kerr County
and lived near the present town of Ingram. The hardship of life in those early days
was evident by the discovery many years later of stones marking the graves of
four of their children. The property
owner found the broken stones and carefully restored them, then put them in a
safer place with a pipe fence around it.
James Allen Young, who is
listed as one of the four buried at the Young Family Plot, grew to young
adulthood and married Nancy Jane Cade in Kerr County
on the 4th of July 1890.
Just 6 months later, he died and left Nancy a widow. But she was already carrying their
son. James Edward Young was born the
following spring on April 11, 1891.
Nancy was the daughter of Gilford Cade and his wife, Frances. She and the baby lived with her brother,
Herschell, while her son grew up. He
eventually reached adulthood and moved to San Antonio. He married Rosa___ about 1914 and worked
as a motorman on a street car in the city.
Tragically, James Edward died of tuberculosis on July 23, 1922, at the
young age of 34.
James’ grandfather, John
H. Young, died between 1890 and 1900 but his widow, Anna, continued to farm
their land. She lived in Kerr County
during that time, then moved to Gillespie
County and eventually went to Hopkins County when her youngest son, Albert,
moved there about 1920 to work as an auto mechanic. Anna died in Sulphur Springs, Hopkins Co., Texas,
on February 5, 1923. She was the
daughter of James Watson and his wife, Mary Jane, who also lived in Kerr County
in those early days.
One of John’s and Anna’s
children was a daughter, Cora Lee Young, who married Joseph Edward Lackey on
June 11, 1899, in Kerr
County. He died in 1918 of pneumonia and Cora Lee
soon married a family friend, Joe Denton, who was also widowed. Cora and Joseph Edward Lackey had seven
children.
Cora’s brother, Charles H.
Young, married Henrietta Evans in Kerr
County on November 9,
1893. After farming in the Ingram
area, he and Etta moved to San Antonio where
she worked as a Laundress and their daughter, Lena,
was a private nurse. Charles had no
occupation at that time (1910) which may indicate he was disabled in some
way.
The youngest child of John
& Anna Young, was Albert who became an auto mechanic and moved to Sulphur
Springs in Hopkins County,
Texas, by 1920. His wife’s name was Donna and his mother,
Anna, lived with
them. Anna Watson Young lived to be
72 years of age and spent her final years in the household of her youngest
son, Albert. She died and was buried
in Sulphur Springs, Hopkins Co., Texas.
