Hubert Haliburton (H.B.) Nelms and his wife, Rubye
VIctoria KITE Nelms lived on California Street in Borger,
TX. He died in Amarillo Veteran's Hospital in December
1968, during an ice storm. His second wife Alma Nelms
lived in Borger, TX also. They (Hubert and Alma) both lie
in Hillcrest Cemetery, Gray County, McLean, TX., and
Rubye lies in Borger, in the cemetery in the town off
10th Street.
He was born Jan. 23, 1895 in Arkansas and raised in
Oklahoma. He served in World War I and was blown from the
trenches and the explosion broke both is arms and legs.
He said it was the "landing" that broke his
body. He also had mustard gas damage to his vocal cords
and spoke very softly. Hubert drove a school bus
throughout the late 1940s and 1950s. He was a janitor for
the Jr. College and drove their sports bus to
competitions. H.B. Nelms never told anyone his name of
Haliburton and was a Baptist and a Democrat - in that
order.
