Hidalgo County County was created in 1852 and formed from Cameron County. Hidalgo County was named for Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, the priest who raised the call for Mexico's independence from Spain. The County Seat is Edinburg. The largest city is McAllen. Reynosa, Mexico is McAllen's sister city.
