Speech Arts Department - 1936

Lucille Nix - Director

Attention!  Did you know that a new department was added to Gladewater High School this year?  It is called "The Speech Department" and students may now receive speech training as a part of their regular school work.  There were thirty-two students enrolled in the class this year.  One of the interesting features of the class was its poarticipation in Choral Reading, a practice which has become very popular in the speech field, especially in Universities.  The class served as a source for several chapel programs during the year.

The Dramatic Club, a unit of the department, consists of seventy-five students who are particularly interested in drama.  The initiation of the members was administered in connection with a social event at the High School.  The one-act play which the club entered in the Interscholastic League Play Contest was "A Cup of Tea", a rollicking comedy from beginning to end admirably played by Bob McCutchin, Dorothy Newell, Leon McKillip, and Mary Francis Nixon.

The first major production of the year was "Give Me Credit".  The Pep Squad Club sponsored the production while the cas was chosen from the Pep Squad Band and Pep Squad Club.  The following were members of the cast who succeeded in making the performance a success:
James Tenery
Junior Carney
Charles Rook
Dorthea Maness
Helen Crumley
Geraldine Kilgo
Jimmie Richardson
Elaine Creamer
Minnie Louise Bean
Nettie Green
Thelma Clark
Melba Rose Wood
Hazel Garner
Leroy Neal

The second major production was the Junior Class Play - - "Girl Shy".  This three-act comedy was shown to a full house on February 13 and 14.  The cast is to be complimented for its smoothness.  Those doing outstanding work as members of the cast were:
Leon McKillip
Robert McCutchin
Mary Ella Dickson
Geraldine Boatright
Francis Nixon
Geraldine Kilgo
Mary Lynn Victory
Marjorie Lasiter
Frankie Brown
Junior Carney
Trentron Boyd
Thurmond Jones

Topping the theatricals fo the year will be a beautiful drama in three-acts - - "The Garden of the Moon" to be presented as the Senior play.

It is interesting to note that stagecraft is also being taught to a few who have helped in building the sets for the production.  We look forward to still bigger and better things next year.
