1934-1935 Kilgore High School Reflector Yearbook
Alma Mater

More than 60 years of educational progression have passed since the first institution was established that eventually became our High School. It was in 1874 that Dr. Alexander gave the funds to build the first edifice of learning that was named in his honor. When financial conditions made it impossible for the Alexander Institute to carry on, it was moved to Jacksonville in 1894. Alexander Institute then became what is now known as Lon Morris College, financed and supported by the Methodist Church.

The old college buildings remained in their previous locations and the prosperous little town of Kilgore was without educational facilities but a short time. Kilgore Public Academy, a school of ten grades, continued until the present site was donated and a red brick building was constructed in 1912. It was in that year that Kilgore High School assumed its present name and received its first aid from the state.

In the winter of 1933 we moved into our present $250,000 building where we have the choice of 30 credited units.

In summarizing our progress, let us compare the faculty and senior class of '35 with that of the first in 1912. In 1912 Kilgore High School was taught by a faculty of four and the graduating class numbered three. In 1935 the faculty consists of twenty-five in the High School alone, while the graduating class numbers 125 from a student body of 800.
