Gray County, Texas - 1880 United States Federal Census

Description:

The 1880 U.S. Census introduced several new questions dealing with mental health, schooling, and family relationships. Many of these questions, specifically those detailing mental and physical health, can only be found within the original census document.   This data can offer personal detail lacking in earlier census surveys, and covers a generation that the 1930 U.S. Census does not cover.  The family relationships category can provide information about extended family. If a married daughter has been counted as part of her father's household, for example her married surname will likely appear in the census.  

Tips for using the 1880 U.S. Census  

Try a different spelling
The online census has the “Soundex” feature. Keywords are often categorized by the sound of the last name, meaning you might find additional information by using more than one spelling.  

Watch for neighbors
When recording census information about your ancestors, remember to look at the families listed immediately before and after that ancestor. Often, family members would live near one another, and even if they don't appear to be related (a different married name, for example) they may be part of the same family.  

Print and preserve
Transcription helps with fact checking and provides easy-to-read reference sheets. Print a copy of each individual census record then transfer the information to a census chart.
