THE MARLINIAN
1929

It is the purpose of the Book to capture something of the sprit of a happy, fleeting year.  May it, in later years, be a real book of joyful memories and a true chronicle of school day happenings to be echoed and reechoed through the halls of the future.

In compiling the material for the various Books of the Annual, the staff has not been unmindful of its obligation and responsibility to the student body. Throughout the Book an attempt has been made to preserve are presentative school life of the session 1928 – 1929.

A nation could not exist without its citizenship; a school would be impossible without a student body; this issue of the Marlinian is made possible by the support of the students and businessmen of our city.

The Board of Trustees

Who and what is the foundation of our school?  The people?  Yes.  But it is the representatives of the people who have the responsibility and burden of carrying on the administration of the intricate system of education.  The organization and prestige of this institution depends directly on the service and wise administration which has brought Marlin High School to its present high standard.  Surely, they must love this school of ours, to devote their time and energy and minds to the upbuilding, administration, and well-being of its existence.  To them, we accord all honor and praise.

Our Superintendent
Mr. McIlhany

Our Superintendent

There are many things which endear out high school days to us.  Memories of hours well spent, happy days, gray days, beautiful friendships, well-earned achievements, but above and beyond all towers the lasting regard for our beloved superintendent, Mr. McIlhany.  His brilliant mind, his lovable personality, his kindness, his benevolent smile, and his quality as a teacher and guide all contribute to his wonderful success and achievements as Superintendent of Marlin High School.  High School days without the presence of Mr. Mac seem impossible to the students of Marlin Hi, and to him who has added much to the richness of these years we accord all due love and esteem.

Mike Bentley

Our Principal
Mr. Betts

Our Principal

During his many years of service of Marlin Hi, Mr. Betts has endeared himself to us to such an extent that it is safe wager we won’t forget him until we are gone and forgotten ourselves.  In the capacity of the principal and history teacher, Mr. Betts has proved very capable.  Although his has been of inestimable benefit to the school from the standpoint of material service, the privilege of daily association with this loveable man has served to enrich and make more enjoyable these years in Marlin Hi.  We have profited greatly by his counsel and guidance and now, let us with him the greatest blessings and happiness, for these are the things he has striven to give us as students of Marlin High.

Freshman Class

Freshman Class

Every year there comes to Marlin Hi a new group, the Freshman.  This year an exceptionally fine group came.  The Fish entered all agog fearing for their lives, and viewing their elders with respect.  We all like Marlin High because we get to travel so much – at the end of each period.

In four years we’ll form the best Senior class yet, also the best Marlinian Staff.

Some of us entered Latin and did well.  In fact the freshman representative won the district meet at Waco.  We did well also in declamation.  We have a great deal of intellect and are very brilliant, but we’d make better grades if we studied.

Our sponsors, Miss McDavid, and Mrs. Barnett, deserve some credit of our great ability.

Our glorious freshman year is over, and not until we enter college will we be ruled and knocked about by upper-classman.  When we attain the rank of Juniors or Seniors – woe to the freshman.

Our Favorites

Our Favorites

The young ladies and young men who have the honor of being on this page should be gay with pride.  The title means just what it says, “Our Favorites”.”  Step the way for a moment, Folks, “Every picture tells a story.”

Frank Turner is a typical good fellow.  A sunny disposition, an excellent athletic record, and his four years faithful class work have endeared him to his classmates.  One reason we love him is because he’s no genius, and has to dig for an average grade.  (A glance at his picture tells just why the feminine sex love him!)

Ruth Bryan has always been a favorite.  She is pretty and sweet – the type of girl in which one confides.  She is popular with the girls as well as the boys.

Virginia Earle Smith, as well as being poplar young lady, is a talented dancer.  Loads of personality, beauty, and her twinkling toes will get her safely there.

Garland Barton, “Sheriff”, is always either getting into or out of scrapes.  He is liked by all M. H. S. students, however, because he’s funny and cute; and incidentally, he has “winning ways with the girls.”

And lastly, we have Imogene Langford.  Great big pretty eyes and the cutest smile you ever saw – that’s “Suga”.  Rather shy and demure, but not too shy for people to realize she’s on the campus.

What do you think of our taste?  Don’t you think they deserve the name of favorite?

Marlin High
School Band

Marlin High School Band

The Band is one of the most important and valuable organizations in the Marlin High School.  It was just three years ago that this band was only a wish; just three years ago Mr. J. E. King was appointed band master.  Since that time Mr. King has done marvelous work with his band.

After three months of work Mr. King was able to organize a band, and a little later a small orchestra.  This orchestra played concerts the following summer and the next fall the back was prominent on the football field.  This same winter saw the purchase of the beautiful uniforms that has added so much to the appearance of the band.

Last summer the band did its most effective work in boosting Senator Tom Connally.  Its members rode many miles and made many trips and really felt that they helped in election Mr. Connally to the Senate.  The back also played concerts twice a week.  A regular back stand has been built by the Chamber of Commerce for them.

During the fall, winter and spring of ’28 and ’29 the band has progressed rapidly.  Several new instruments have been purchased; the Chamber of Commerce has aided the band financially.  During this time the band has continued playing for the chapel exercises, football games and various entertainments.  They have made several successful trips to neighboring towns, and have had a very successful year.

Several good men will graduate this year and will be missed.  Many more are developing to fill their places.  Prospects for a good band in the future are therefore excellent.
