GEORGE ENGLISH
VETERAN NURSE
DIES OF WOUND
George
Ellis English, veteran 51-year-old colored male nurse at Torbett Clinic and
Hospital, was found dying of a shotgun wound early Thursday morning at his
home, 905 Coleman Street in Marlin.
His son, George English, Jr., teacher in
the Temple public school system, who arrived in Marlin soon after being
notified of his father's death, said his father was checking a shotgun about
5:30 a.m., preparatory to going hunting with a friend. The son said his
father apparently was unaware the gun contained a shell. He said his
father was struck in the neck when the gun accidentally discharged, and died
before he could be removed to a hospital. His mother, he said, was at
at the time, but in another part of the house.
Sheriff Brady Pamplin and Justice of the
Peace J. E. (Peg) Powell investigated the shooting. Powell returned an
inquest stating "death was self inflicted by shotgun" -- a finding
contrary to the family version of the death.
English senior had been employed at
Torbett's the last 31 years. He was a Marlin native, one of 12 children
of the late Mr. and Mrs. Allen English. He was a member of the Marlin
Baptist Church on Bennett Street, the colored Chamber of Commerce, and the
American Woodmen Lodge.
The body is resting at Dorsey - Keatts
Funeral in Marlin. Arrangements are awaiting the arrival of
relatives.
Surviving are his widow, Lillie Mae
English, a nurse at Torbett Clinic and Hospital; one son, George Jr.; three
daughters, Mrs. Fay Kyles, teacher in the Houston schools, Mrs. Robbie A.
Weatherspoon, also of Houston, and Mrs. Jewellene Scales of Boston, and nin(e)
grandchildren.
