"Education is the nation's biggest business," Dr. C. E. Friley, dean of the department of arts and sciences at A. and M. College of Texas, told Marlin high school graduates at the commencements exercises in the school auditorium Tuesday night.
The program opened with an overture, "Lutspiel," -- Keler-Bela, by Marlin high school's 1931 state champion class B band, directed by Judge W. S. Hunnicutt and with several of the seniors among its membership.
The band also played Sousa's "Washington Post" as the processional march, during which members of the 1931 graduating class, wearing caps and gowns, entered.  Rev. O. W. Hooper, pastor of the First Methodist church, gave the invocation.
Followed the salutatory by Wilson Weiting, a vocal solo, Mendelssohn's "Spring's Song," by Neil Lois Garrett with accompaniment by Mrs. Floyd Cole, the valedictory by Gaines Sparks, a piano duet, "The Wandering Jew," -- Muller, by Marye Louise Criswell and Alyce Fae Steele, Dr. Friley's address, presentation of diplomas by G. W. Glass, president of the board of trustees, members of which were seated on the stage, and announcement of honors by H. J. McIlhany, superintendent.
In addition to announcing class honors, the superintendent presented bookkeeping certificates to Annie Belle Towers,  Flora Sudbury,  Carolyn Schindler,  William Lange, and Genevieve Hancock, these students making grades of 85 or better in this course.
The 46 members of the senior class receiving diplomas were:

Note: The spelling of the superintendent's name is McILHANY, it looks like McIlany when written in this article.  A large bit of this article is missing but it mainly has to do with a speech about Texas A & M.  If anyone knows what SPARKS first name is please let me know. kc
