CANNING DEMONSTRATION GIVEN AT BEULAH-SHIELDS

Series of Threatening Showers Fails to Dampen Enthusiasm

of Ladies Greeting Miss Jacks.

To the Democrat:

Miss Onah Jacks gave a fruit canning demonstration to the Beulah-Chilton Demonstration Club June 16, at the of Mrs. A. Taube.  There were twenty members present and eleven visitors.  Mrs. Charles Stone was enrolled as a new member.

So keenly are the ladies of this community interested in securing all possible help from their county agent, that a series of threatening showers could not drive them away from the demonstration.  Only occasionally nervousness was manifested, depending on the number of young chickens at or the miles of muddy roads in prospect.

Each member brought a hen to be sold, the proceeds to be applied on the purchase of a club canner.  They also brought the quilt blocks, the pattern for which had been distributed at the preceeding meeting.

The ladies met at Mrs. Taube’s again Thursday and Friday afternoons and quilted the quilt, bringing sandwiches which were enjoyed during social hour.  The quilt will be sold and the money used for the club canner.

A modern sealer and reamer has already been purchased, and those  owning canners individually or in groups have generously offered to lend them to other members until a club canner is secured.

The club gardens are disappointing, but the members are canning all they have, and buying both fruits and vegetables to can when the price seems to justify them in doing so. One member, Mrs. Taube, canned a beef recently and others plan to do so in the early fall.

An effort is being made to have several families go to A. and M. and camp during the July short course.

The next meeting will be with Mrs. Joe Polk and her mother, Mrs. Ethel Laughlin, July 2. Reporter.
