       The high school building at Hewitt was considerably damaged by fire.

       Sylvester H. Bright, a negro school teacher of Taylor, was arrested by Constable Olive Monday night on the charge of robbing railroad cars, the sleet on the ground showing footsteps leading to his house, a search of which revealed about $100 worth of groceries neatly stowed away.

       Friday afternoon about 2 o'clock Herbert Arvin was driving a cow along the street and just as he was passing Mr. Schulz' residence the cow kicked him on the right leg, breaking both bones below the knee.  He was carried into Mr. Schulz' house and Drs. Oates and Conrad were called and dressed the limb, after which he was taken home.  He had a restless night but is doing very well today.

       Mrs. Kirby, wife of H. H. Kirby, ticket agent at Battle, dropped dead Friday morning at an early hour.  Interment will be made tomorrow at that place.

       An attempt at forgery was made Friday by a negro to cash a check at the First National Bank with the name of H. H. Punchard to it.  The suspicion of the bank officials being aroused as to its geuniness, Mr. Smyth stepped to the phone and while in the act of phoning Mr. Punchard, the negro disappeared through the crowds.

       Wednesday evenign the little 5-year-old girl of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Farrar, living about three miles from Mart, was seriously if not fatally burned while playing around the fire that had bee used in killing hogs.  Mrs. Farrar was also badly burned about the hands in an effort to extinguish the flames enveloping the child.  At last reports from there today are to the effect that the child is very low with chances against its recoving.
