LOCAL HAPPENINGS.

 

    J. Ed White of Thornton is with Bunch, Adams & Co.

 

    Mrs. E. E. Fannin of Denton is visiting her mother, Mrs. Singer.

 

    Holiday travel to the old states will be lighter this year than usual.

 

    Considerable corn is being marketed in Marlin and is bringing 60 to 65 cents.

 

    James A. Dowd and Wm. Mueller of Fort Worth are visitors to Marlin.

 

    Mrs. Turner Ferrell of Otto is spending the Christmas holidays in North Carolina.

 

    Mrs. Earle Bradford of Missouri is visiting relatives in Marlin for the holidays.

 

    Permits to wed:

 

    Herman Weiting, Miss Olga Schmalz;

    J. W. Byers, Miss Lydia Roberts.

 

    Mrs. W. H. Matthews and Mr. Fred Askey of Gonzales attended the Wright-Matthews nuptials.

 

    J. W. Gregg left Thursday for Florence, S. C. to spend the Christmas holidays at this old home.

 

    Miss Dafnah Hunt and Jimmie Collins of Varela are visiting friends in Marlin, guests at Mrs. Kennedy's.

 

    Misses Pauline Battle and Alice Cousins are from Kidd-Key College at Sherman for the holidays.

 

    Percy W. Morrow, the well known representative of the L. & N. railway, was here today on business.

 

    Charley Peyton, who is attending the Austin College at Sherman, is spending the holidays at home.

 

    John Portele and Alfred Williams are from St. Edwards College at Austin for the holidays.

 

    Permits to wed:

    G. W. Beatty, Miss Alice Burgess.

 

    John W. Pelt, who lives west of the river, took passage Thursday for Vinegar's Bend, Ala., where he will spend the holidays.

 

    Dr. Fred T. Murphy and family of Brinkley, Ark., are here to spend Christmas with Capt. and Mrs. W. B. Murphy.  Miss Kate Murphy, who has been visiting them since September returned with them.

 

    The accumulation of cotton ready here to be compressed in Marlin when the press closed down and also that which has been received since, is being shipped to Calvert, Waco and other places for compressing.  Local buyers have been put to considerable inconvenience by the closing down of the Marlin press.

 

    W. F. Bassett and wife of Kosse were among the visitors to Marlin Thursday.  Came over to get some of these rare bargains from Marlin merchants.

 

    C. P. Sivalls, formerly a well known showman, is in the city from Houston.  Mr. Sivalls traveled a good many years for Barnum & Bailey and has seen every town of importance in the United States.

 

    J. H. Q. Wells and wife of Memphis, Tenn., accompanied by Mrs. John Gratner of Mart, are guests of their sister, Mrs. Jeff Funderburk.  Mr. Wells left Wednesday for Jennings, La., on business and will return before the holidays are over.

 

    The ladies of the Catholic church are succeeding quite well with their bazaar at Cheeves & Linthicum's.  They have a nice line of useful and oranmental (sic) articles for Christmas.  The proceeds will go toward improving the church property in Marlin.

 

    The office of the Marlin Electric Light and Power Company is now located near the plant in a new office building recently erected.  Mr. Nathan had his office in The Democrat building for six years and was a splendid neighbor.  The change gives him more room, which he needed, and it also gives The Democrat some more room, which it also needs.

 

    Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Featherston left Thursday for their in Henrietta, after a most pleasant visit to Marlin.  Mr. Featherston came here for rheumatism with which head been afflicted for fifteen years.  Says he is delighted with the effects of the water here.  He finds this water far superior to Hot Springs for medicinal purposes and will return again early in the new year.

 

    Judge L. C. Alexander returned to Waco Wednesday afternoon after a two days' visit to Marlin.  The Judge is well known to those of our citizens who have resided here very long, having occupied the district court bench here frequently.  He and W. H. Featherstone, former city marshal, had a pleasant reunion here and recounted many early and interesting incidents in the common knowledge of both.
