FIRE DEPARTMENT RECEPTION.

-----

Open House to Friends--Fast Run

Made By Boys.

A reception meeting of the fire department was held Tuesday night at the station, with the chief and his assistant, the mayor and several members of the city council, and a large number of the members of the department present.

    B. F. Foster, assistant chief, opening the meeting, stated its object, to show the council and the citizens of Marlin the good condition in which the station had been placed, and to tender a luncheon that the fire boys had prepared.  He then presented Geo. H. Carter, the chief, who on behalf of the department made an address to which S. O. Jones responded on behalf of the city council.

Mr. Carter spoke of the condition of the department in general, comparing it with that of other departments in the state which he had visited.  He said that Marlin fire department did not suffer in comparison with that of any town int he state, whether larger or smaller than Marlin.  He then gave a history of the organization of fire fighters in Marlin from the time that the company was chartered int he '70,s, when the "man killer" used, and when the water supply was limited.

In response City Attorney Jones stated that he was heartily in favor of what head been said by the Chief, and although he was not a member of the city council, yet he felt assured they would give all the possible assistance and encourage to the department (rest of sentence missing-lsc).

The boys then made an exhibition run from the station to the public square and thence down Live Oak street to the plug at the Silverman corner.  Time 2:30.

Delicious cream and cake were served by the fire boys.  Conspicuous on the center table was a large and most beautiful cake presented to the department by Mrs. W. W. Hunnicutt.  It is truly an evidence of perfection in the culinary art and was much admired by all.
