       The Institute of the Marlin City School will be held Nov 8, beginning promptly at 9:30 a.m. The program follows:

ETHICAL TRANING

       1.  The law against Artificial incentives.
       2.  Value of school management in cultivating ethical virtues.  Worth all it costs.
       3.  Best of instruction also most most (sic) efficient in ethical training.  Miss Elam.

       1.  Pressure for mere instruction not to subordinate the higher ends of the school.  This is often done when true spirit of instruction is wanting.  Miss Barclay.

       1.  Self-sufficiency of pupils under the per cent system.
       2.  The per cent system a shield for poor teaching, and of most use to the teacher who lacks skills in presenting knowledge.  Miss Frank.

       1.  Use and abuse of per cents.
       2.  Percents always involve the personal equation and hence are unreliable except as a guide to the person making them.  Miss Wright.


       1.  Use and abuse of examinations.
             a. What an examination cannot test. 

             b.  Chief use of all tests is to ascertain the pupils' thinking power, grasp of the subject-matter, and mental habits.  Miss Ingram.

       1.  Examinations should never entail fear, dread or nervous strain.

   2.  The end of all study is growth and manhood and not mere ability to pass an examination.  Miss Owen.

       1.  Use of prizes, medal, rewards of honor, etc.

       2.  Emulation to be placed on the same plane as per cents.  Miss Buckingham.

       1.  The school a minature world, a transition from family to complex social life.

2.      Good school management a duty we owe to society.

3.       A disorganized school an educational crime, a tendency toward anarchy.  Miss Robinson.

       1.  Politeness.
             a.  Only another phase of the law of unity.
             b.  The inner spirit wanted, not the outer form.
             c.  The teacher must address himself to the ideal in the pupils.  Miss Peyton.

       1.  Order.
             a.  This involves:
                    1.  Punctuality,
                    2.  Silence,
                    3.  Doing things at the proper time and place.
             b.  The moral virtue of order to be emphasized.  Miss Torbett.


       1.  Truthfulness.
             a.  Required by the law of unity.
             b.  Incentives to untruthfulness to be removed by the teacher.
             Miss Fain.
       1.  Industry.
             a.  Disorganizing power of idleness.

             b.  Schools should supply men and women filled with a love for work.  Miss Sellers.

       The teachers will come prepared to discuss the following questions:

       1.  What about the use of per cents on monthly report cards?
       On term reports or work done by the pupils?

2.      Will 95 per cent on one examination mean the same as on another?  Why?  What does the grade 95 per cent mean?
