THE FIREMEN'S CONTEST.
-----
Sub-Station No. 2 Wins First Heat.
-----
The first match run of
the sections of the hose company in the contest for the silver cup took place
Wednesday afternoon and resulted in a victory for sub station No. 2, time 21
1/4.
The test was a run of 50 yards and coupling
a line of hose 100 feet long, two firemen connecting the hose with the hydrant
and two the nozzle with the hose.
The sections and the time were as follows:
Central Station: McComb, Eddins,
Finley, Fannin. Time 23 1/4.
Sub-Station No. 1: Curry, Carter,
Burkhead, Oltorf. Time 22.8.
Sub-Station No. 2: Fountain, Davis,
Martin, Allen. Time 21 1/4.
The contest was quite animated and afforded
interesting amusement for the onlookers and excellent exercises and practice for
the boys, all of whom did good work.
One team complained that the pressure was
not the same in the three tests and that they lost time as a result of this
difference.
This is also designed to be a test of the
water pressure and the test was highly creditable to the water works company.
The boys placed an extensive ladder against the Fannin hotel, carried a line of
hose to the top and found the pressure sufficient to throw water over on the
Peacock building.
The second test for the cup will be
announced later.
