COUNTY SCHOOL NOTES
BY  A.  W.  E.
----------

The Union school has a splendid plat of land for a school yard, and the pupils are busy cleaning it up at recess time.  The room is neat and tastily decorated with evergreens and red berries.  The walls have some fine pictures, and the boards show signs of work. The attendance is not as good as it has been on account of the top crop of cotton.

One thing noticed was that the work in the number drill was put on the board during the recitation, and after the recitation was finished it was left to make seat work.

Miss Clara Moore is the teacher for this term, and is getting splendid cooperation from parents and pupils.  Union

----------
Poverty Flat.

The Poverty Flat school has had a house cleaning, put up new curtains and pictures, and makes a neat, tidy, homelike room.  The attendance is light, but the work goes on just the same.  Miss Clara Peevey is teaching her first school here, but she has had the advantage of normal training, and goes about the work in a businesslike way.  Poverty Flat

----------
Durango.

Durango school is also suffering on account of the cotton, half of the pupils are out in the fields.  The school is doing some excellent work.  The faculty is Mrs. Kate Alsup, principal:

Miss Chester High, intermediate department, and Miss Lola Moore, primary department.  Miss Moore had a serious accident a few days ago and her place is supplied by Miss Annie Kellough.  The order and work of the school is good.  A very enthusiastic and interesting lesson in agriculture was recited during his visit.  The making of spelling words into sentences by the intermediate spelling class was well done.  Durango

----------
Jenna.

A very busy little school is Jenna, with Miss Nelle Rouse for teacher.  A more earnest set of pupils would be hard to find.  The primer class here seems to be especially well started.  Maybe the fact that each recitation in the primer closes with work on the board by the pupils have something to do with the good showing they are making.  Jenna

----------
Hog Island.

The most beautiful room yet visited was at Hog Island.  It had lately been painted; the pupils have cleaned it as clean as could be, tasty pictures were on the walls, evergreens, red berries, pop-corn, mistletoe, colored borders, pictures of Mr. Turkey and real yellow pumpkins all made a “Thanksgiving” decoration that was indeed beautiful.  The parents were present on Thanksgiving, and were delighted with the decorations as well as the splendid exercises rendered by the pupils.

Miss Fannie Hays is doing her second year’s work here, and it is useless to say she is “making good.”  The splendid singing of the pupils, prove again the wisdom of the work done in the institute in learning new songs.  The school has a large enrollment, fifty seven, but the top crop is interfering some with the attendance.  Sewing Club – Hog Island and Hog Island

----------
Reagan.

The primary room in the Reagan school was very appropriately decorated for Thanksgiving, and presented a splendid appearance.  Miss Bertha Stevenson is teacher, with a very large enrollment, near sixty.  Some more institute work was noticed here; the children are learning the new songs, and also play the color game and the pointing game very nicely.

The work and order was of the best, and the children are making good progress.

The intermediate room, with Miss Bertha Canady in charge, was also decorated for Thanksgiving and presented a beautiful appearance.  This room also has a large enrollment, but is making good progress.  The word drills in reading lessons were very thorough, and every pupil in the grade recited the memory gem assigned for the lesson.

The grammar grade room is taught by Miss Florence Davidson, who was attending the Baylor Coming, and had her place filled by Miss Fannie Johnson.  The high school room is for the third time under the direction of F. J. Turner, and this promises to be the “best ever” year in the Reagan school.  Reagan

----------

Cross Roads.

The Cross Roads school house has been repaired, a supply of coal laid by, and things made ready for a successful school.  Miss Minnie Whitlow is teacher for her second year, and gets on well with the work.  This is a good working room, and everyone seems anxious to do his best.  The geography lessons were introduced with a short review of the past work, which helps very much in the mastering of the lesson in hand.
