SAVE THE ALAMO
~~~~~
What Daughters Of Texas Republic
Are Doing
~~~~~

     The Alamo, as we know it, is about 160 years old. It is said the foundation was laid in 1744, though the corner stone indicates that it was laid in 1757, in which year it was secularized by royal decree. The term Alamo means cottonwood and as many such trees were round there some think it was so named but the probability is that it was so
called by the first garrison that came here from Fort Alamo de Parras in the province of Coahuila. The church was built for devine service and for protection against Indians but it has been much used as a fortress by Mexicans and Texans.
     The Alamo consists not only of church known by that name. The convent grounds are the property of the Hugo & Schmelzer Co. They extend northward from the Alamo to Houston street and thence to the ditch. It is this property that the Daughters of the Republic of Texas are buying. They have already paid $25,000 upon it but mainly through the liberality of Miss Clara Driscoll and have contracted to pay the remaining $50,000 at the rate of $10,000 per year It is to aid in raising some part of this fund that the Battle of Flowers and Carnival will be held and such attractions and brilliancy will be presented that will astonish and delight. All are naturally interested in the ladies work. In coming to San Antonio they will not only aid them but find continual pleasure. - Ex.
