Abraham Pevehouse

Abraham Pevehouse was born in 1813, the son of Jacob Pevehouse and Rachel Kellums.  Jacob and Rachel were married in Grainger Co., TN, but moved to Lawrence Co., AR.  Jacob was b. 1775 and d. in 1840 in what is now Waller County, across the Brazos River and six miles east of San Felipe.  Rachel reportedly d. in 1832, just prior to the family's move from Lawrence Co., AR to Brazoria.

Abraham married Mary Elizabeth Hodge, who was the niece of the Mary Hodge who married Abraham's brother James Pevehouse.  James and Mary Pevehouse were the parents of Travis Pevehouse, (bio of Charles Williams) mentioned in one of the items already found on your site.

The children of Jacob and Rachel Kellums Pevehouse are as follows:

     1.  Sarah (Sallie) Pevehouse, 1800-1845.  She married first John McCutcheon Smith who died in AR and m. as her second husband the Rev. John Woodruff.   A daughter from her first marriage was Mary Smith, who m. 1st in 1836 to Hugh McCrory.  He died after only six weeks.  In 1840, Mary married Dr. Anson Jones.  Sarah is buried in the Old City Cemetery (sometimes called Pioneer Cemetery) in downtown Houston.

     2.  James Pevehouse, 1802 - 1839 or 1840 (At the time of his father's death in 1840, James was already dec'd.); m. Mary Hodge (1801 - 1846). Probably d. in Ft. Bend Co., TX.  Texas Rev. soldier

     3.  Nelson Pevehouse, 1804 - 1835; m. Prudence Ross; died at Ft. Gibson, OK

     4.  Catherine Pevehouse, 1808 - 1883.  She m. John Lasley.

     5.  David Arthur Pevehouse, 1811 - 1897.  He died in Navarro Co., TX. He is a Texas Rev. soldier.

     6.  Abraham Pevehouse, 1813 - 1885, m. Mary Elizabeth Hodge.  He reportedly died at Kosse, but I believe he lived at Stranger.  His burial place is unknown to me.

     7.  John Pevehouse, 1814 - circa 1858, m1 Martha Roberts; m2 Kizziah Petty; d. Navarro County, TX.  He is a Texas Rev. soldier.

     8.  Preston Pevehouse, 1815-1878.  He m Cyrena Bell, 1815-1877.  They lived near San Felipe and later moved to the Walker's Creek area in Milam County.  In an old letter, Preston told his brother David that he lived on the stage road from Cameron to Calvert.  Have been unable to locate his burial site and Cyrena's.  Both have probate in Milam County.  He is a Texas Rev. soldier.

     9.  Mary Martha Pevehouse, 1817 - 1852; she m. Leo Roark, the famous Indian fighter.

David Pevehouse and Leo Roark, in addition to being brothers-in-law, were also best friends.  Leo's and Mary Martha's daughter, Mary Hellen Roark Hight, had twin sons whom she named Leo Roark Hight and David Pevhouse Hight.

Mary Smith McCrory Jones married Anson Jones, the last President of the Republic of Texas.  She was very active in preserving Texas history. Immediately following Jones' death in 1858, Mary put together the state and diplomatic papers from his administration and had the published. She was largely responsible for the formation of the Texas Veterans Association and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, of which she was President from the time of its inception in 1891 until her death on December 31, 1907.

If anyone has information on Abraham Pevehouse and his family, I would appreciate hearing from you.  I will be happy to reciprocate.

Thanks,
Eddie Day Pevehouse
