JOHN WARD, I

 

     John Ward I, b 1792 in North Carolina, d 1865 and buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marlin, Falls County, Texas - married ca 1816 in North Carolina to Mary Helen Rhodes, d prior to 1850 in Limestone County, Texas. Their children included: Sterling Stephen Ward, b 1817 in North Carolina, d 1878 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas; Jane Ward, Winnie Ward, Emily Ward, Jacob Ward, b ca 1825 in North Carolina; Enoch, b ca 1831 in North Carolina; and Mary Helen Ward, b April 2, 1836 in Georgia, d August 21, 1873 in Falls County, Texas - married Robert Allen Oakes.

     About 1842, John and Mary Helen (Rhodes) Ward moved through Alabama and Mississippi to Texas, and by 1845 they were residing in Limestone County, where Mary Helen died. In 1846, John Ward I was teaching school in a "little cedar log house about 14 feet square, with a dirt floor and split log benches." The school was taught only in May and June in 1846, and had fourteen students. In 1850, John was a widower, and his son Sterling Stephen Ward's family were in the same household in Limestone County. In 1856, John was listed as a Justice of the Peace, Precinct 5, of Limestone County. Descendants of John and Mary Helen (Rhodes) Ward were prominent in the affairs of Falls County, Texas - and many still reside there.
