EUGENE TYRONE

 

 

     Eugene Tyrone, b July 9, 1905 in Lott, Falls County, Texas - was a son of Nathan and Martha (Smith) Tyrone. Eugene entered the U.S. Army on January 3, 1943, but received a medical discharge in September of that year.

     After the Veterans Hospital in Marlin was completed, Eugene was employed as a Nurse Attendant, and remained in that vocation for twenty-one years, when he retired.

     Eugene is a member and Deacon of Marlin Missionary Baptist Church, Chairman of the Food Committee, and Secretary of the Brotherhood. He is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Falls County Appraisal Board, and serves as Treasurer of the Marlin Chapter of the Falls County N.A.A.C.P.

     On December 28, 1932, Eugene was married to Mabel A. Tyrone, b September 20, 1906 at Cedar Valley Community in Falls County - a daughter of Sanford James and Essie C. (Wallace) Taylor. Mabel earned her B.A. degree from Samuel Houston (now Houston - Tillotson) College in 1944, and received her M.A. degree from Prairie View A&M University at Prairie View, Texas.

     In 1929, Mabel began teaching in the Tomlinson Hill Elementary School- teaching for fifteen years in the Shields-Academy District. In 1944, she was employed by the Marlin Independent School District to teach freshman and sophomore English at Booker T. Washington. When the school was integrated in 1968 with Marlin High School, Mabel was transferred and continued her career in teaching English until her retirement in 1972, with forty-three years of service.

     Mabel is a member of the Marlin Missionary Baptist Church, a former Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, and Church Clerk. She is involved in many civic activities, including: Past-President of the local A.E.S. Johnson and Clover Leaf Clubs, Vice-President of the Carrie Adams District of the Texas Association of Women's and Girls Clubs, and other offices of Texas Association of Women's and Girls Clubs, and Vice-President of the National Association of Colored Women in the Southwest Region.

     She is a charter member and first Grammateus of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and past Basileus of Gamma Phi Zeta Chapter. She is a member of Hiawatha Court 183, Heroines of Jericho, and served as recording secretary, treasurer, and Queen of Hiawatha Palace No. 57 - being now the Most Ancient Matron. Mabel has served as Secretary and Librarian of the Falconer Stamps Library; and is presently a member of Marlin Chamber of Commerce, Falls County Historical Commission, United Charity Board, Falls County Cancer Board, Marlin Developmental Board, and an election Judge of Falls County Precinct 28. She was one of the Founders of Falls County Historical Museum.

     Eugene and Mabel own their in South Marlin. They have no children, but have helped to rear and educate two of her relatives.

     Jernice Marie (Taylor) Hood, a niece of Mrs. Essie C. Taylor, was given to her aunt at the death of her mother. When she was ready to enter college, Jernice was educated by Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Tyrone who accepted her as their daughter. Jernice finished Prairie View A&M College. Now she resides in EI Cerrito, California where she is principal of an elementary school there.
