LOUIS ALBERT TUMLIN, JR.

 

 

     Louis Albert Tumlin, Jr., b April 13, 1926, d May 10, 1981 - was a son of Louis Albert and Beulah Ann (Strain) Tumlin of Jonesboro, Jackson Parish, Louisiana. He attended public schools in Jonesboro and Hodge, Louisiana. He was barely sixteen when he graduated from high school, and wanted to enter the U.S. Navy, but was too young. When he became seven- teen, his mother agreed to sign a release, and he was inducted into the U.S. Navy on March 21, 1944 - serving until June 8, 1946 in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He then returned home, completing a business college program, with basic studies in business administration and accounting. After working for his father's business for about a year, Louis joined a large construction firm in Houston, Texas, and his project location was in the North Louisiana area.

     On December 6, 1950, Louis was recalled into the Navy because of the Korean conflict, being sent again to the Pacific area, and subsequently to Japan. When discharged February 18, 1952, he rejoined the construction company and served in Pennsylvania along the eastern coast to the Mississippi delta, and then assignments in Port au Prince, Haiti, and later Maraciabo, Venezuela - working overseas about five years, and being transferred to the office in Houston in 1960.

     On August 17, 1962 in Rosenberg, Texas, Louis Albert Tumlin, Jr. was married to Gloria Bell Clark, b October 16, 1925 in Rosebud, Falls County, Texas - a daughter of James Alvin and Katherine Ann Dobson (Williams) Clark. Gloria attended public school in Rosebud, graduating in 1943, and then attended South- western Business College in Houston - completing courses in general business. Upon completion, she worked in Houston for a large shipbuilding company, which was under contract to the U.S. Navy for Destroyer Escorts and Landing Ship Medium construction - joining the parent company in 1945 in their corporate offices in Houston, completing thirty-nine years with the company. In the early 1950's as the company began foreign construction, she worked with the personnel director in obtaining passports, visas, etc., which were needed for the employees travel, and during the last twenty years of her work, she served as department manager of the division. During her tenure as departmental manager, she traveled into Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, and was given early retirement in January 1981.

     Louis Albert and Gloria Bell (Clark) Tumlin, Jr. had two sons:

     David Clark Tumlin, b May 30, 1964 in Houston, Harris County, Texas - is a member of the Roman Catholic Church and attended parochial and public schools in Westbury and Meyerland areas of Houston. On June 7,1985, he married Pamela Ann Vansa, and they now work and reside in Temple, Texas.

     James Timothy Tumlin - also reared a Roman Catholic, was b April 2, 1965 in Houston, Harris County, Texas, where he attended parochial and public schools in the Westbury and Meyerland areas of Houston. He now resides in Rosebud, Texas.

     On October 18, 1983, Gloria Bell (Clark) Tumlin returned to her roots in Rosebud, Falls County, Texas, and is active in both church and community affairs. She is presently serving as Secretary for the Rosebud Sesquicentennial Committee and the newly organized Rosebud Park Commission. She is also a member of the Wednesday Study Club of Rosebud - serving on various committees within that organization.

     Gloria and Louis are members of the Roman Catholic Church.
