SANFORD TAYLOR
Sanford Taylor, b September 9,1883 near Chilton, Falls County, Texas, d
May 1967 and buried in the family cemetery at Cedar Valley, Falls County, Texas
- was a son of Hezekiah and Julia (Stuart) Taylor, I, who were born into
slavery, but freed as children in Falls County. Sanford's parents died in 1891
and 1893, and he and four siblings were reared by their maternal grandparents,
Peter and Sarah Stuart.
Sanford grew up on the family farm, and had only eighteen months of
formal education. He possessed a determination to learn, and taught himself by
reading magazines, newspapers, and the Bible.
About 1904 in Falls County, Sanford Taylor was married to Essie C.
Wallace, b April 6, 1884, d May 20, 1965 and buried in Cedar Valley Cemetery - a
daughter of Dock and Joanna (Landrum) Wallace. They were the parents of two
daughters: Euna Lee Taylor, b 1905; and Mabel Taylor, b 1906.
Euna Lee Taylor, b July 7, 1905 near Chilton- grew up in the Cedar Valley
Community. She was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Marlin, and
received her B.A. degree in Social Arts at Paul Quin College. She also studied
at Tillotson College in Austin. Euna taught school for five years at Satin. On
February 20, 1926, she was married in Marlin, Texas to John Roberts, and they
had one son:
Hiawatha Taylor Roberts, b November 1, 1926 in Chilton - was a graduate
of Tomlinson Hill Elementary School, Booker T. Washington High School, and
studied for two years at Prairie View A&M University. He served in the U.S. Army
for two years, and then entered the University of Colorado at Denver. Hiawatha
met and married Jane Gertrude Carter in Colorado, and obtained his Law Degree
from the University of California in 1953. He is presently an Attorney General
Counselor of Oakland Unified District in Oakland, California, where his mother
now lives. Hiawatha and Jane have six children:
Althea Roberts, b December 4, 1950 in California - is a graduate of
California State University in San Francisco, and is Office Manager of Roberts
and Stokes Law Firm. She married Kenneth Griffin.
Karen Amelia Roberts, b June 30, 1953 in Oakland, California - is a
University of California graduate, and works in Real Estate.
Sandra Eugenia Roberts, b March 12, 1957 - graduated from California
State University and Hastings School of Law. She is a partner of the Law Firm of
Roberts and Stokes, and is also a C.P.A. She is married to an attorney, Pan
Stokes - a partner in the Law Firm.
Sanford Marc Roberts, b December 22, 1960 in California - is an
Electronics Technician.
Marie Yvette Roberts - a twin, b July 8, 1964 - is a graduate of Spilman
University, Atlanta, Georgia, and is a free-lance writer for Roberts and Stokes
Law Firm.
Marian Yvonne Roberts - a twin, b July 8, 1964 - is a graduate of
U.C.L.A. and is a Real Estate Appraiser and Office Manager.
Euna C. (Taylor) Roberts was married second to a Mr. Tucker, and had no
issue in this marriage. She resides in Oakland, California, and is a teacher in
Child Development in the Oakland Unified School.
The second daughter of Sanford and Essie C. (Wallace) Taylor was Mabel
Taylor, b September 20, 1906 in Falls County, Texas - married December 28, 1932
GO Eugene Tyrone, b July 9, 1905.
The Taylor family has always believed in the importance of education, as
their descendants have demonstrated.
