BENJAMIN LOUIS LANDRUM TAYLOR
Benjamin Louis Landrum Taylor, b February 24, 1871 in a log cabin at
Blevins, Falls County, Texas, d September 24, 1931 in Marlin, Falls County,
Texas and buried there in Calvary Cemetery - was a son of Reverend
Isaac Taylor, b ca 1828 in Kentucky, and his second wife, Amanda Frances (Ruble)
Taylor, b 1838 in Grimes County - The Republic of Texas, d
January 1875 and buried in Blevins Cemetery - a daughter
of Fielden and Frances (Simmons) Ruble. Benjamin's father was a Methodist minister, who came to Falls
County about 1855.
Benjamin was educated in the Falls County schools, and he applied himself
assiduously to his studied until he was nineteen. On October 16, 1890, Benjamin Louis
Landrum Taylor was married at Holland, Bell County, Texas to Cora Ella Bowers, b
December 26, 1871 in Oxford, Mississippi, d September 10, 1960 in Marlin, Falls
County, Texas - a daughter of Daniel and Aurilla (King) Bowers. After their
marriage, Benjamin managed his father's farm for about four years, then became
bookkeeper at a mercantile store in Blevins. He was elected Justice of the Peace
for that Precinct. In 1900, Benjamin ran for, and was elected, Falls County
District Clerk, and he and Cora moved with their family to Marlin.
Quoting from a publication, Texas and Texans, "Falls County is a
well-governed community and among the officials who are discharging their duties
in a capable manner is Benjamin L. L. Taylor. He has had experience in official
and business life, and this combined with his natural ability, keen discernment,
and knowledge of human nature, enable him to maintain a high standard and
dignity of his office."
Benjamin served as District Clerk for six years, then turned his
attention to insurance and the cotton j
business. In 1910, he was elected Justice of the Peace in Marlin for two
terms, and then became Marlin's night policeman -
serving until his death. He was a member of the Methodist Church, and his
fraternal affiliations were with the Woodmen of the World,
the Masons, and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
Cora Ellen (Bowers) Taylor was a member of the
First Assembly of God Church.
Benjamin and Cora Ella Taylor were the parents of eight children -
the order of their birth is unknown:
An Infant Son Taylor, b December 1, 1891, d December 2, 1891, and buried
in Blevins Cemetery.
Roy Taylor, Robert L. Taylor, and Ronald Taylor, were all deceased in
1986. No further information.
Reverend Reginald Rice Taylor resides in San Antonio, Texas. A sister,
Evelyn Taylor, has never married and resides in Marlin, Texas. Ruth Taylor
married Benjamin Lamar Powell and resides in Marlin, Texas. Ramona Taylor
married Marvin L. Ramby, and resides in Marlin, Texas.
Benjamin Louis Landrum Taylor's descendants can rightly claim that their
ancestors truly helped to make and shape the course of Texas and Falls County
history. Some have remained in Falls County for over 130 years.
