CEPHAS
ISAAC MATTHEWS
Cephas Isaac Matthews, b April 13, 1874, d January
2, 1948 at Reagan, Falls County, Texas ‑ was a son of Isaac and Tennessee
Matthews. He married Addie Mae Peeples, b August 13, 1884, d September 4, 1964
and buried in Waite Cemetery at Reagan ‑ a daughter of Rufus Pinkney and
Alice Peeples. One of his younger brothers, James Matthews, died at the age of
twenty‑one, and Cephas took the responsibility of arranging the funeral.
Cephas was a farmer in the Reagan area, and he and
Addie were the parents of three children:
Eldred Matthews entered the army at an early age,
and made the military service his career. He is now retired, and has never
married.
Cephas Irl Matthews, b January 20, 1911, d January
6, 1970‑was a Sergeant in the Medical Corps during World War II and
Korea. After twenty years of service, he retired and later worked in the New
Braunfels and Torbett‑Hutchings‑Smith Memorial Hospitals. He died
of a heart attack while on duty. He was married to Mary Inez Worthington, b
August 1, 1909 ‑ a daughter of Julius Benjamin and Viola (Stark)
Worthington, and who still lives in Reagan, Texas. They had one daughter, Norma
Jean Matthews, who was a talented pianist and a graduate of Sam Houston State
University. Norma is married and has children.
Paul Matthews, a veteran of the U.S. Army during
World War II ‑ married Georgia Staley, and works for the Kennecott Copper
Mines. They adopted Timothy Matthews and Paulette Matthews.
