JOHN BENJAMIN LANDRUM

 

 

     John Benjamin Landrum, b August 24, 1872 in Falls County, Texas, d March 3, 1942 - a son of Samuel and Mary Elizabeth (Rains) Landrum. He married on March 1, 1910 in Marlin, Texas to Mrs. Johnny Lee (Bedell) de Graffenried, b March 24, 1877 in Stockdale, Wilson County, Texas, d October 27, 1861 in Marlin- the third daughter of Hezekiah and Julia Ann Rebecca (Edmiston) Bedell. John Benjamin and Johnny Lee (Bedell) Landrum were buried in Carolina Cemetery in Falls County, Texas.

     John Benjamin Landrum was called "Boy" most of his life. He attended Texas A&M in 1890, returning to manage his share of the family farm and to help his sisters with theirs. In 1920, he was elected Commissioner for Precinct 4 of Falls County, but was defeated in 1922 because he was an ardent anti-Klu Klux Klansman. John Benjamin was a Deacon in the Chilton, Texas Presbyterian Church, a member of the Chilton School Board, a charter member of the Rotary Club, and a member of the Chamber of Commerce.

     John and Lee (Bedell) Landrum had four children:

     Samuel Bedell Landrum, b January 3,1911, d September 7, 1965 - married in November 1940 to Helen Dutton of Beaumont, Texas, and had three children: Mary Elizabeth Landrum, who did not marry; Katherine Jane Landrum, who married Alan Barclay Hendricks and had two sons, Jason Barclay and Samuel Hendricks; and John Samuel Landrum, who married Susan Holt and had two children, Catherine and Travis Landrum.

     Katherine Ann Landrum, b November 26, 1912, married December 7, 1940 to Robert Gray Carter of Marlin, Texas.

     Dorothy Jane Landrum, b November 1, 1914, d February 18, 1917.

     Marjory Lee Landrum, b February 21, 1917, married April 17, 1938 to Jack Tubb, of Marlin.
