J. R. HUNNICUTT

 

     J. R. Hunnicutt, b July 4, 1894 in Marlin, Falls County, Texas, d March 3, 1973 in Travis County, Texas and buried in Blue Ridge Cemetery in Falls County, Texas - was a son of Robert Smith and Rosella (Varnado) Hunnicutt. On September 4, 1926, he married Lilly Grigsby Atchison, b March 18, 1898 in Oklahoma, d May 3, 1985 and buried by her husband.

     J. R. worked at the Texas Selective Service Headquarters in Austin when it was organized in April 1917 by Governor W. P. Hobby. In 1918, he joined the Texas Rangers and was a sergeant when he resigned in 1922 to attend Texas A&M University, where he took a pre medical course, then attended Baylor Medical School. He served as administrator of several hospitals and sold hospital supplies.

     In 1926, J. R. was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Army Medical Corps, retiring as a Major. In 1930 he worked as a U.S. Customs Inspector, and changed to the Internal Revenue Service in 1937, from which he retired.

     During World War II, J. R. was administrator of a 2100-bed hospital in England, where he served five years.

     He was a member of the Travis County Chapter of Easter Star, a 32-degree Mason, and a Shriner. He was a member of the Sheriff's Association of Texas, the Texas Police Association, Vice-President of the Texas Association of Ex-Rangers, a member of the Reserve Officers, and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

     J. R. and Lillie were of the Baptist faith, and they had three children:

     J. R. Hunnicutt, Jr., b October 7, 1928 in Austin, Texas-married Nell G. Teeples, b April 10, 1932, and had Janet Ruth (Hunnicutt) Dobbels, b June 3, 1950 in Austin, who lives at Blue Ridge with her three sons: Todd Allen Dobbels, b October 18, 1970; Michael Scott Dobbels, b February 17, 1973; and Shaw Daniel Dobbels, b September 29, 1974, and she works for Texas Human Resources in Marlin; Elizabeth Hunnicutt who is a nurse in Marlin; Kathryn Ann Hunnicutt who is a nurse in Marlin; and Jerry Ray Hunnicutt who is in the U.S. Army in Radio Communications - now serving in Germany.

     Martha Jean (Hunnicutt) Stevens, b February 18, 1931, lives in Grand Prairie, Texas.

     Doris Ruth Hunnicutt, b September 3, 1933- married Robert C. Tate, D. D., of Colorado.
