Nehemiah (G.?) Gould

Nehemiah Gould, enterprising and progressive farmer of Ellis County, was born in Mississippi, September 19, 1837, a son of Robert Gould, a native of East Tennessee. Robert Gould immigrated to Alabama and later Mississippi, where he was among the first settlers. He married Miss Sarah Harris, a native of Alabama, and both died in Mississippi. They were the parents of five children: James, (d. 1844, age 14); Mary L., (married B. F. McWhorter, and died 1878 in Mississippi);  N. G., (more later); Sarah F., (married Dr. M. D. McWhorter, lives northen Mississippi;);   and Nancy J., (married H. H. McWhorter, who was killed  CSA at Baton Rouge;. Nancy  m/2 1866, J. W. Lewellen, lives Mississippi)..

N. G. Gould enlisted in Co. K, 31st Mississippi Regiment, under Colonel Orr, and served in the Western Department of the Army of the Tennessee, mostly in Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia and Kentucky, participating in several battles.. After fourteen months' service as infantry, he was transferred to cavalry of the Second Mississippi State Troops, W. L. Lowery, commanding.. He served there eighteen months until it was when it was consolidated into Ashcroft's Regiment, Armstrong's Brigade. He continued his service until the end of the War - never wounded or captured.

Nehmiah Gould came to Texas in 1870 and settled in Ellis County where he now owns 450 acres of land - 185 under cultivation

Mr. Gould married Miss Sarah C. Wells, a daughter of Rev. Miles A. and Mary (Moody) Wells, natives of Tennessee. After her father died in Mississippi during the War, her mother came to Texas in 1870 and died in 1885.

Mr. and Mrs. Gould had seven children: the eldest died in infancy; Robert  (died 10 months);  John H., (born August 24, 1886, is farmer Ellis County); Mary A., (born October 14, 1868, is at home); Luther G. , (born February 10, 1872, at home); Joel F., (born July 15, 1877, died December 2, 1881); and Robert B. (born August 26, 1880)

Mr. Gould is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and the family are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
