Sumner Archibald Cunningham

Editor of Confederate Veteran is Dead

[Although not a member of this Camp, Cunningham had attended at least one meeting nd the resolution was in respect for his position as editor of the CV]

To Commander and Comrades, Camp Winnie Davis, No. 108.

A great man has fallen, great because of his broad and deep patriotism, his love of truth and justice, with which - alike to friend and foe, he discussed every issue and question demanding his time and attention.

Death came to this strong man December 20, 1913. Death was due to a series of hemorrhages of the nose, first attack was on the 17th of December. He was born in Tennessee in 1843. Served in Co. B. 41 Tenn. from 11/61 to close of the war.

A lover of the south, the memories of the lost confederacy - its heroism and its gloom and desolation hung about his memory as the cypress branch hangs about the tombs of our dead. Thus inspired his great life work, well done, was aimed at a defense of the South, and more than all else, to build up a true history of the cruel war waged against the south by the U. S. And while doing this, he did not detract from one foe any merit of glory due the brave and patriotic soldiers of the Union Army, who met us as a brave soldier is wont to meet his foe in open field and honorable warfare.

His love of the Case he espoused is demonstrated beyond a doubts, by the fact that he bequeathed his all (except one thousand dollars he gave his sister) to trustees to take up the work where he left it off. Though dead, his works survive him.

Therefore, be it resolved that this humble tribute be spread upon our Minutes, to the end that his name shall not be forgotten.

That this Camp, as a further testimonial of their appreciation of his pure life and devotion to a noble cause, contribute 10.00 to his Monumental Funds.

B F. Marchbanks for Com. [committee]
