Special Honor for Ellis County's

Jack Lummus

 

A special ceremony Friday at  the Texas State Cemetery in Austin will honor Jack Lummus who grew up on a cotton farm in Ellis County. An All American football player at Baylor University, Lummus also played for the New York Giants. but in January 1942, gave up his professional career to join the Marine Corps. He was one of some 100 Baylor alumni killed in World War II, and was awarded the Medal of Honor. The Baylor Alumni Association is responsible for this special recognition. A small tombstone-like marker with his named engraved on it will be officially recognized at the ceremony in Austin. Among those taking part in the ceremony will be Lt. Governor David Dewhurst, Baylor interim President William Underwood and retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Maria Owens. The latter, a Baylor alumnus, was at one time the highest ranking Hispanic woman in the armed services. [Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2005]
