My greatgrandparents William Lafayette & Mary Jane (VILLINES) CURNUTT, were among a large group who came to Ellis County in the 1880's from Arkansas. Other known members of the group were, her parents, Hezekiah & Mary Elizabeth (FARMER) VILLINES, and her uncle Abraham VILLINES (with his family). I believe that Bird & Jane (CURNUTT) FARMER, elderly parents of Mary Elizabeth VILLINES may have been in that party. Since I have not found their burial places in other areas, I wonder if they are buried in Ellis Co. One son of William L. and Mary J. was born near Ennis, so burial might be in that area. I Would appreciate help with a look-up of cemetery records. Also interested to know if some branches of these families remained in that area.

BURNS, WALKER,SMITHWICK,SIMS

Carol Vincell  Apr 9, 1998 09:32
My GGGrandmother,Narcissa or Narcssa Burns died in Houston in 1925 at the age of 113 according to the Newspaper article written about her. "Oldest known White Woman in Texas" Also the article talks about her husband who fought in the Tex.Republic war and in the Civil War. The only records that I have been able to find are for a Robert Burns. He died in 1898, his widow, also from Houston claimed his pension. I suppose the Robert Burns could have had two families, because Narcissa has been located in records back to 1860 census with two daughters Mary and Martha (Martha was my GGrandmother) Several Census she shows up in Galveston,Ellis and Harris Co's, but never with her husband, who's name she bears.

A friend has asked for my help to locate any records about her fathers family. I am going to tell her story exactly as she wrote in her letter. My father Milton Robbs was born in Witchita Falls,TX.in 1900. His mother and two brothers and two sisters died when he was 18 months old. They died from thphoid fever from the local drinking water. My dad did not die because he was nursing. His father, a traveling salesman, was away at the time, so he did not die. He took Milton and moved to Mineral Well, TX. Then he died when Milton was abt. 6 years old. His great uncle James Taylor Robbs took him and raised him. Milton's parents are William Alexander Robbs and Katie Cantrell, William b. on Jan. 1853, in TN, and Katie on Oct. 1871, in LA. My friend is mainlylooking for the parents of Katie and any other records that may be related to this family! Any help with this family would be greatly appreciated!! BELL, John W.

Stacy L. Cooke  Apr 18, 1998 11:53
In the Boren cemetery just south of Reagor Springs is buried one "John W.Bell, Co. G.,43 Tenn. CSA Infantry" but the marker has no dates. My cousins, who live in Waxahachie and Ennis (and other places in the State) became interested in the cemetery as our great-grandfather and great-grandmother are buried there (him in 1985 and she in 1893). The old cemetery is terribly overgrown and I am attempting to gather as much information as possible about the graveyard so that we can make an appeal for help in getting in cleaned up and possible establish a trust fund for its continued care and maintenance. I have a list of about 160 people buried there - the last in about 1925. So, there has not been much attention paid to this cemetery in a long time. The list that I have was prepared in October, 1956 by a Mr. & Mrs. A.L. Feltenberger, and I understand from a cousin (who provided me the list) that Judge A.R. Stout about that time had the cemetery cleaned up and fenced. The old barbed wire fence is essentially down, and many of the gravestones are missing or fallen over. My great-granfather buried there was Henry L. Cooke who is the progenitor of the Cooke clan of Ellis County, having come to Ellis County from New Bern, N.C. (with a 20 year interim in Mississippi.) It is a shame to have a cemetery with so many early pioneers in such deplorable condition. Can you provide any info regarding the John W. Bell conferate soldier? There are no dates on the tombstone, and short of a search thru the National Archives, I have not been able to garner anything about him or the 43rd Tennesse CSA infantry. Do you have any suggestions on how I might find the deed or other legal description of the cemetery before an effort is made to clean and fence it? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I can be contacted as above or at 610 Carter Drive, Diboll, Texas 75941. (Phone 409-829-5771)

HUNTER, ELLIOTT

Vicki Dennis  May 11, 1998 02:44
In 1910 census for Waxahachie, Ellis County Fannie HUNTER is Shown living with 3 young sons. She is shown to be a widow and a matron at orphanage. Anyone know about this orphanage? In 1900 she was Fannie A. ELLIOTT living with her parents in E>D>18 Ellis County on family farm. Married Felix Alonzo HUNTER November 1900 in Lancaster, Tx with Rev. Crutchfield officiating. He had been in Ellis county since at least 1880. Delayed birth certificate for one son shows parents living in Ferris Texas in August 1901 when Tony Tennyson HUNTER was born. Father Felix HUNTER listed as city marshall at that time but since info filled out in 1942, I am not sure about its accuracy regarding 1901!

WATKINS, MCKANNA

VICKI DENNIS  May 11, 1998 03:09
Ennis, Ellis County 1900 census shows Winnie WATKINS living with 15yo son Marion, 13 yo daughter Millie WATKINS, son in law Amus MCKANNA, daughter Daisy WATKINS MCKANNA and two granddaughters Hazel and Winnie MCKANNA. Census shows Winnie WATKINS to have 1 more surviving child and that Daisy and Amus married two years. Any chance marriage license in Ellis county? By 1910 everyone but Millie moved to Dallas and Daisy listed as widow. Census still shows 4 surviving children so maybe Millie WATKINS got married back in Ellis county? Also Hazel MCKANNA and another MCKANNA child had died. Are there county death records for 1900-1910?. Would like to find 4th child of Winnie WATKINS, burial places for dead children, and especially ANY further record of AMUS MCKANNA. He just dropped out of sight down the RR track!
