Vernon Wright Photo Graveside services for Vernon Wright, 84, were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2002 in Spur Memorial Cemetery with Rev. James Lambert, retired minister of First Christian Church of Arlington, and long time friend of the family officiating. Services were under the direction of Campbell Funeral Home.

Vernon died Thursday, April 11, 2002 in the home in which he had lived since 1941.

He was born June 27, 1917 in Cleburne to Ace Taylor and Ella Mae Oliver Wright who eventually reared ten children, five boys and five girls. The family moved to Spur when Vernon was a child to farm in the community, principally Red Mud.

Vernon was once married to Dorothy Oleta Teague. After his marriage, he completed Barber College in Fort Worth and returned to Spur to begin his lifetime. He worked briefly for Panhandle Eastern Gas in Dumas during World War II. He returned to Spur where he lived the remaining years of his life.

Vernon had two great pleasures of accomplishment in life. The first being an original member of the Dickens County Sheriff Posse and Polo Team. The team eventually became the long standing World Championship Palmetto Polo title holder. After his retirement from active playing, he continued coaching the team until its termination. The second pleasure was his serving terms of office as Dickens County Commissioner.

He attended First Baptist Church of Spur.

Vernon is survived by two sons, Douglas Wayne Wright of Plainview and Kenneth Don Wright of Spur; one granddaughter, two grandsons and two brothers.
