Biography

Horace Brumbelow Wood and Clarice Laine Thannisch were married March 24, 1932 in First Methodist Church at Spur, Texas. They lived on their ranch south of Spur until November 1939 when they moved two miles north of Spur; with their two daughters Margaret D'Laine, born 3/13/1934 in Spur, and Beverly Clarice born /1/1935 Spur. Horace and Clarice and daughter Priscilla Elizabeth, born 4/30/1945 Rotan, Texas, moved to Lubbock, Texas in June 1961.

Horace was a charter member of the Spur Lions Club. In 1947, he served as Grand Chancellor of the Knights of Pythias. He was awarded the 32 degree in Masonry in 1951 by the Dallas Consistory in Stephen F. Cook class. He became a Shriner in Nov. 1963, in Lubbock. The Caprock Peace Officers Ass'n was originated at his ranch and held its annual Barbecue and Rattlesnake Shoot there for many years. He served as President of Methodist Men's Club in Spur in 1960-61. He served on the school board of Spur Independent Schools for several terms.

Clarice Wood taught in two Dickens Co. schools - Dry Lake 1927-28 and Afton High School 1931-32. She also taught Spanish and English in Spur High School during World War II. She is a member of the Spur Chapter of Order of Eastern Star. In the 1931 Study Club, she served as president, and was also an officer in the 1933 Study Club, and the City Federation of Women's Clubs of Spur. In the First Methodist Church, she was christened by the first pastor Rev. R.A. Stewart who had to live in Dickens until a parsonage could be built in Spur. Her church activities included teaching in Youth and Adult classes, and in Woman's Society of Christian Service where she was honored with a Life Membership in 1955. In Parents and Teacher's she served as local unit president at Spur, vice-president of Dist. 18, and served on State Board of the Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers as president of Dist. 18 for three years. She holds a Texas P.T.A. life membership.

Horace and Clarice were active members of the Spur High School Band Boosters Club and Girl Scout Board. Horace photographed many football games, parades, and other activities and was member of the Dickens Co. Sheriff Posse.

Margaret D'Laine Wood graduated from Spur High School as class Salutatorian in 1951. She was Editor of The Rowell, and played in the Spur High School band. In 1951, she was selected as Lion's Club Queen for Dist. 2T1. She received her degree from Texas Tech in 1954 and taught Junior High English in Galveston while her husband Harold M. Brannan attended Texas Medical School.

Beverly Clarice Wood was Valedictorian of the Spur High School class of 1953. During high school, she was solo flutist for the band, and accompanist for the choir. She received her B.S. degree in Home Economics from Texas Tech in 1957 and her M.E. Degree in Art Education at Penn State in 1958. Her husband is Jerald H. Krieger.

Priscilla attended Spur High School two years and was graduated from Monterey High School in Lubbock in 1963. She was a member of the National Honor Society and the Monterey High School choir - Las Cantores, and soprano soloist for the Madrigal singers. She attended Texas Tech and received her degree from Boston University, Boston, Mass. in Aug. 1967. Her major was Anthropology. She is married to William Barlow Heaves who graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard University Cambridge, Mass. in June 1966.

Horace and Clarice Wood have five grandchildren; Stephen K. Brannon, nine years, Rhonda Beth Brannon, seven years, Ross Wood Brannan, four years, Scott Wood Krieger, five years, Melissa Laine Krieger, two and a half years.

The Horace Woods still operate their ranch in Kent County and live at 3206 - 56th Lubbock, where they are active in many civic and church affairs.

Services for Clarice Laine Wood, 83, are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on December 10, 1992, in the First United Methodist Church, Spur. Burial will follow in Spur Memorial Cemetery.

Her daughter, Rev. Pricilla Neaves, Arlington and local Methodist pastor, Rev. Kenney Kirk, will officiate.

Porter Loring Funeral Home in San Antonio and Campbell Funeral Home, Spur, will be in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Wood died December 7, 1992 in San Antonio. She was born April 18, 1909 in Spur. She married Horace B. Wood on March 24, 1932 in the First United Methodist Church, Spur. For many years she served as Spur correspondent for the Lubbock Avalanche Journal.

She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and was former Texas division, vice president; former regent of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas; former chapter president of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She was a charter member of the United Methodist Women of the United Methodist Church, Northwest Texas Conference; charter member of the Ranch Headquarters Assn., Texas Tech Museum; state officer in the Texas Conference of Parents and Teachers Life member of the Gilliespie County Historical Society; charter member of the 1931 Study Club in Spur.

She had resided in Spur, Lubbock and Fredericksburg prior to her death in San Antonio.

She is preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, William J. Laine and Tanner Laine.

Survivors include her husband; three daughters,Margaret Wood Brannen, San Antonio; Beverly Wood Krieger, Austin and Priscilla Wood Neaves, Arlington; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Horace Photo Services for Horace Brumbelow Wood, 88, were at 2 p.m., May 9, 1993, in the First United Methodist Church. Rev. Ted Dotts, Lubbock, officiated, assisted by church pastor, Rev. Kenney Kirk.

Burial was in Spur Memorial Cemetery under direction of Campbell Funeral Home.

Mr. Wood died May 4, 1993 in San Antonio following a lengthy illness. Death was due to natural causes. He was born in Paint Rock and had resided in Spur, Lubbock and Fredericksburg. He was a retired Kent County rancher.

He married Clarice Laine in Spur on March 24, 1932. She preceded him in death on December 7, 1992.

He was a member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas, charter member of the West Texas Museum, charter member of the Ranch Headquarters Association of Texas, Texas Tech Museum, and the Masonic Khival Temple, Amarillo.

Mr. Wood served as a member of the Spur School Board for 15 years, was a former member of the Spur Lions Club, Fredericksburg Masonic Lodge 794 AF & AM, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry S.J. USA, 32nd degree. He was a director of the Cap Rock Peace Officers Association.

Following his retirement, he hand carved birds and animals and was an artist.

He is survived by three daughters, Margaret Wood Brandon, San Antonio; Beverly Wood Krieger, Austin and Priscilla Wood Neaves, Arlington; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
