Biography

Russell D. Williams Sr. was born Jan. 30, 1912 in Stephenville, Texas. His parents were Henry Williams and Chellie Suitts. They moved to Fisher County in 1916. He started to school in 1919 at the Dal Community School. In 1922 the family moved to Dickens County and settled in the Steel Hill Community; he finished grade school there and then finished Spur High School.

He married Velma Howe September 10, 1939; they had five children, Letha Nell, Russell D. Jr., Shelly Ann, Robert D. and Kathleen.

He was Deputy Sheriff in 1946-1947.

He was elected Commissioner from Precinct No. 3 in 1957 and was re-elected for another four year term.

Obituary

Russell Dan Williams, 97, of Abilene and formerly of Spur, died Wednesday, July 15, 2009. Services will be 1:30pm, Saturday, July 18th at Campbell Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tommy Henderson officiating. The family will receive friends from 10-11:30am, Saturday. Interment will be in Spur Memorial Cemetery. Russell was born January 30, 1912 in Stephenville to Henry and Chellie Suitt Williams. He attended school at Steel Hill Community and Spur. He married Velma Howe on September 10, 1939 in Spur. Russell farmed in Dickens County until his retirement. He served as Deputy Sherriff in Dickens County from 1946-47. He was elected Dickens County Commissioner Precinct 3 in 1957, serving two terms.

Russell is survived by his wife, Velma of Abilene; one son, Robert �Bob� Williams and wife Ann of Lavon, TX; two daughters, Shelly Briscoe and husband Bobby Taylor of Abilene, TX and Kathy Estes and husband Loyd of Sweeny, TX; one brother, Willard �Snooks� Williams of Spur; one Sister, Norwetta Mathis of Lubbock; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Letha Collings; one son, Russell Dan Williams, Jr.; his parents; and two brothers, Dillard and C.L. Williams.
