A.W. Watson, 73, Passed Away May 16 Following Stroke of Paralysis

A.W. Watson, 73, prominent farmer of Dickens County, died at his home two miles east of Spur, Friday, May 16, from a stroke of paralysis suffered a week before. Mr. Watson had been having trouble with his heart for some time but was able to be up and attend to business until the time of the stroke.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church at 4:30 p.m. May 17. Rev. H.L. Thornton officiating. Interment was made in Spur Cemetery under direction of Campbell Funeral Chapel.

Augustine Wheat Watson was born in Atlanta, Georgia, November 14, 1867 to Mr. and Mrs. John D. Watson. While a young man, Mr. Watson moved to Jack County, where he was married to Miss Talitha E. Radden, October 27, 1892. Mr. and Mrs. Watson had spoken of plans to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary next year.

Ten children, eight of who survive, were born to this union. One child died at birth, and Sam Watson preceded his father in death in 1927.

Mr. and Mrs. Watson resided at San Marcos, where Mr. Watson managed his father's land until 1900, then moved with their family to Brown county. The Watson's established their home in Dickens County in 1922, where they took great interest in the community and became prominent in civic, church and social affairs.

Mae Watson who is in the Army Air Corps stationed at Manila, Philippines Islands, was the only child unable to attend the funeral. Other out of county relatives here were: Earl Watson, Hondo; D.D. Watson, San Marcos; and John Watson, Devine; Mrs. Ann Williams, Morton; Mrs. Catty Sphect, San Marcos; Ernest Hersheiser, San Antonio; Jes Hadcon and sons, Orr and Corydon, Blanket; Freddie and Martha Jane Watson of Brownwood and Colorado City; and David Henry and Beverly Ann Watson.
