Biography

William C. Starcher came to live with his aunt and uncle in 1931 and entered the Spur schools, graduating in 1935. He was the only boy that had the honor of serving his class as president the four years that he was in High School. He attended Draughon Business College at Tyler, Texas. Returning to Spur he worked at the Dickens County Times, later becoming Editor and Foreman. He was married to Noema Smith in 1937 and they have two children, Bill and Carmen. In 1941, he entered the Air Force and served 4 years. He came back to Spur and worked in the Times Office, also farmed and raised chickens. He passed away in December of 1962.

Obituary

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 3 p.m. in the Spur Church of Christ for William C. Starcher, 48. He died unexpectedly of a heart attack Saturday afternoon about 2 p.m.

Charles Adams, church minister, officiated, assisted by two former Spur Church of Christ ministers, Robert Bankhead, Elkhard, Kansas and Vernon Williams, Comanche, OK.

Mr. Starcher came to Sur in 1931, when he came to live with his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Starcher, who owned and operated the Dickens County Times.

Born November 28, 1914, he gained his early newspaper experience on that paper. Later he worked for the Hamlin Herald and the Aspermont Star. He graduated from Spur High School in 1935 and attended Tyler Business College. He was a veteran of World War II serving from 1942 to 1945 in the Air Force.

He returned to Dickens County in 1952 from Stonewall County where he had been farming. He went to work at The Texas Spur that year for H.G. Lackey, Jr., and had served continuously since that time as shop foreman - 12 years.

Mr. Starcher married the former Noema Smith, Spur, in Abilene on November 11, 1931. His wife and two children, a daughter, Carmen and a son, Bill, survive.

Other survivors include his mother, Mrs. O.H. Starcher, Carmen, OK. Five sisters: Mrs. D.R. McErath, Houston; Mrs. Bob Orr, Altus, OK; Mrs. Chas. King, Plainview; Mrs. Bob Moon, Ft. Worth; Mrs. S.R. Barker,LaMarque; and aunt, Mrs. Nona Starcher and cousin Bill of Houston.

Interment was in Spur Cemetery.

SPUR (Special) - Services for Noema Starcher, 63, of Spur will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Highway 70 Church of Christ here with Robert Bankhead of Odessa officiating, assisted by Lawrence Ward of Dalhart and Bob Brandon, minister of the Highway 70 Church.

Burial will be in Spur Cemetery under direction of Campbell Funeral Home.

Mrs. Starcher was pronounced dead at 8:20 p.m. Monday at the scene of a car accident one mile north of Spur.

The Stonewall County native moved to Spur in 1952 and worked as a cashier at Spur Security Bank. She married the late William C. Starcher Aug. 29, 1937, in Abilene.

Survivors include a son, Bill of Sheffield; a daughter, Mrs. carmen Settle of Iraan; a brother, Johnnie Smith of Aspermont; a half sister, Mrs. Lue Boldaz of Aspermont; and three grandchildren.
