Obituary

W.A. Smith, a Dickens County pioneer citizen and farmer, died Saturday, Aug. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at his home in the Espuela community after an illness of more than seven years.

Funeral services were held at 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, at Spur Church of Christ, Andrew Morris, minister officiating.

Interment was made in Spur cemetery under direction of Chandler Funeral Chapel.

William Andrew Smith was born July 17, 1872 at Coldwater, Miss. and four years later, Sept. 10, 1911, he was married to Willie Lee Pritchett.

Mr. Smith obeyed the Gospel and affiliated with the Church of Christ in 1910 and for many years was a deacon in the church where he was regular in attendance until ill health prevented his leaving his residence.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Willie Lee Smith, a brother, J.L. Smith of Seagraves; seven sisters, Mrs. Hattie Osteen and Mrs. Alice Nichols of Memphis, Tenn. Mrs. Irvie Moore of Arkabutla, Mrs. Mary Worthy of Roscoe, TX and Mrs. Beatrice Cornwill, Water Valley, TX, J.N. Luce of Spur and Mrs. Emma Davis of Lubbock, cousins of Mrs. Smith were here to attend the funeral.

Services for Mrs. Willie L. Smith, 61, were held at the Spur Church of Christ on Sunday, March 17, 1957. The rites were conducted by R.C. Copeland assisted by C.V. Allen. Mrs. Smith was born in Hunt Co., TX on August 12, 1895. She came to Dickens Co. in 1904 and had lived at Spur since 1918. She married W.A. Smith who preceded her in death in 1942. She died March 15, 1957. Surviving is her brother, Dan Pritchett of Spur. Campbell Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
