Obituary

Mrs. J. Vernon Powell, 46, for 22 years a resident of the Dry Lake community, passed away at the family home in that section Tuesday evening about 8 o'clock, death following a second heart attack of the week.

Mrs. Powell suffered an attack Monday, but had rallied until the sudden attack Tuesday evening.

Mrs. Powell was born Maude Belle Lawling on February 7, 1892, at Tolar, Hood County, TX, and grew to young womanhood in the family home. On November 9, 1913 she was married to J. Vernon Powell and four years later they moved to the Dry Lake area. She was a fine wife and mother, living unselfishly with her higher ideals of citizenship and Christianity, and was beloved for her generous, friendly nature by all who knew her.

Funeral services will be held this afternoon in the Church of Christ in Spur, 2 p.m. with Rev. J.H.Miles, pastor, assisted by Rev. R.C. Brown, officiating.

Survivors of the family are the husband and three sons: Raymond, Arthur Eldon and Billie. There are two brothers and three sister: J.D. and Claud Lawling, of Ft. Worth; Mrs. Frank Tidwell and Mrs. B.A. Grimes, Fort Worth, and Mrs. E.K. Hufstedler, Lubbock. Claud Lawling and Mrs. Powell were twins.

Probably all of the brothers and sisters will be in Spur for the Funeral except Mrs. Hufstedler, who has been ill in a Lubbock hospital. Others who will be there, many of who have already arrived, are Mr. Hufstedler and daughter, Onita Belle, of Lubbock; E.K. Hufstedler, Jr. Plainview; Mrs. J.V. Morton, a niece, Lubbock; Mrs. Edward Nelson, niece of Fort Worth; Elizabeth Powell, Pauline Shugart, O.D.Powell, Supt. of Public Schools at Forney, TX and many others from points nearer this section.

Interment will be made in the Spur cemetery with Ward Funeral Home directors in charge.
