Last rites for Levi Champion Ponder were held here Tuesday, April 10, at 3 p.m. in the First Baptist Church. Conducting the services were Revs. L.R. Pendley, Tommie Allen and J.E. Lee.

Ponder was born Feb. 18, 1863 in Alabama and died at the age of 93 at his home in Spur on April 9, 1956. He first came to Texas in 1873 and later married Miss Emma Bell on May 28, 1879. The couple made their first home in Sulphur Springs, Texas, and came to Dickens County in 1915, making their permanent home here.

He was converted to the Christian religion when 24 years of age and became a member of he the Baptist Church in 1887.

Surviving are his wife; four daughters, Miss Sophronie Ponder and Mrs. L.J. Phillips of Fort Worth, Mrs. Florene Peninger of Spur and Mrs. Estelle Peninger of Breckenridge; one son, Cecil of Los Angeles, CA.; eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Willie Hindman, Joe Long, Walter Gruben, Clyde Hodge, Raymond Gilcrease and Floyd Hines.

Interment was in the Spur Cemetery under the direction of Campbell's Funeral Chapel.
