Obituary

Services for Joe William Pickens, 76, were Saturday, May 18, 1991 at 2 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church. Church pastor Rev. John Dorn officiated, assisted by Rev. Genoa Goad, pastor of the First Baptist Church.

Burial was in Spur Memorial Cemetery under direction of Campbell Funeral Home

Mr. Pickens died Thursday, ay 16 in the Crosbyton Clinic Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born in Cundiff, TX on June 26, 1914. He had resided in Dickens County most of his life where he was a farmer and rancher.

He married Maxine Thomas on October 16, 1950 in Clovis, NM. He was a member of the Methodist Church and the Dickens County Sheriff's Posse polo team.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine Pickens, Spur; four daughters, Pat Laster, Amarillo; Sandy Duboise, Lubbock; Sue Collins, Gardendale, KS; Barbara Parks, Roaring Springs; two brothers, Durwood Pickens, Girard and Warren Pickens, Canadian; four sisters, Evelyn Farquharson, La Habra, CA; Ruby Moore, Fort Worth; Ann Tow, Amarillo and Jane Cowan, Gardendale; eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Nephews served as pallbearers.

Ruth Maxine Pickens was born November 17, 1916 to the late Clarence Thomas and Gladys Rudd Thomas in Judsonia, Arkansas. She went to be with her heavenly father July 26, 2008. She married J.W. Pickens in 1950. J.W. preceded her in death in 1991.

Maxine's hearty helpings of banana pudding, peach cobbler and homemade rolls made a legendary impression on the school children of Spur for thirty years. Quick to grab her purse, Maxine enjoyed going places and spending time with her family.

Left to cherish her memory are daughter Sandy Duboise of Lubbock, and daughter and son-in-law Barbara and Harold Parks of Roaring Springs, TX; grandchildren, Michael Duboise of Los Angeles; Teresa Ball of Tyler; Donna Luby of McKinney; Robbie Laster of Amarillo; Debbie Naylor of Arlington; Brenda Laster of Amarillo; Lacey Rankin of Roaring Springs and Kasey Bell of Clarendon; great-grandchildren, Brandon, Blake, BJ, Dylan, Aaron, Whitley, Ashlee, Amy, Linley, Aaron, Brody, Brogan, and Kyler.

Services were held Monday, July 28, 208 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Spur with Rev. Larry Burton officiating. Interment followed at Spur Cemetery.
