Biography

Rex Merriman was born April 28, 1904 at Spur, Texas. He was the fifth child of Tolbert and Della Gilmore Merriman. He married Vivian Brown, July 28, 1932 at Crosbyton, Texas. No children were born to them. Rex Merriman died December 29, 1955 at Lancaster, California.

Spur, Jan 2(Special) Funeral services will be conducted here Monday for Rex Merriman, 50, former Spur resident who was killed in an auto accident near his home at Lancaster, CA, Dec. 9.

Merriman, who was born at Spur, made his home there until 1936, when he moved to California. He was a rancher and cattle buyer.

Officiating at services planned at 3 p.m. at the Methodist Church here will be the Rev. Cal Wright, pastor. Burial will be in Spur Cemetery under direction of the Campbell Funeral Chapel of Spur.

Nephews who will serve as pallbearers are Pug Walden, Pat Merriman, T.J.Hill, Leroy Elmore, G. H. Atkinson and C. O. McCullough.

Merriman´s survivors include his wife, Vivian; his mother Mrs. Della Merriman of Spur; a stepson, J. W. Brown, living in California; two brothers Don of Amarillo and Guy of Spur; and a sister, Mrs. R. D. Hill of Spur.

Services Held For Former Resident

Rex Merriman, former resident of Spur was killed in an automobile accident Dec. 2 at Rosamond, CA. Funeral services were held Jan. 31 at the Spur Methodist Church with Rev. C. Y. Pickens officiating, assisted by Rev. Cal Wright.

Merriman was born in July 1904 in Dickens County, and married Vivan Brown at Crosbyton. They made their first home here in Spur. After leaving Dickens County some 18 years ago, he made his home in California.

He was converted to the Christian religion early in life and was a member of the Methodist Church.

Pallbearers were E. B. Walden, Pat Merriman, T. J. Hill, Leroy Elmore, Ervin Smith and G. H. Atkinson.

Survivors include his wife, a step son J. W. Brown, a sister, Mrs. R. D. Hill of Spur, two brothers, Guy of Spur, and Don of Amarillo and his mother, Mrs. Della Merriman.

Interment was in the Spur Cemetery with Campbells Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements.

Services for Mrs. Vivian Lee Merriman, 77, were held at 2 p.m. Friday in the First Baptist Church, Spur, with church pastor, Rev. Norris Taylor, officiating.

Mrs. Merriman died January 27 in a Brownfield Hospital. She was a resident of Tatum, NM. She was married to Rex Merriman in Spur in 1937. She also resided in California, Oregon, Washington and Tatum, where she had lived since 1978. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church.

Mr. Merriman died in 1954.

Survivors include a son, J. W. Brown, Chelan, Washington; a sister, Mrs. Ada Jones, Tatum, NM; four grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.

Pallbearers included Jimmy Brown, Jimmy Atkinson, T. J. Hill, Irvin Smith, Jack Clayton and Glenn Jones.

Burial was in Spur Cemetery.
