Funeral services for J. R. McNeill, 58, were held Saturday at the First Methodist Church. Rev. John Rakestraw officating assisted by Rev. John Peters.

McNeill had served as mayor of Spur since 1956. He was elected in a special election to fill out the unexpired term of Mayor Walter Gruben, who moved from here. He was serving his second elected full term. He had one year remaining.

He was killed Dec. 31 when the light plane he was piloting crashed and burned near Lamesa. Also killed in the crash was a business associate, Herbert Heimer, 24. The men were returning from a business trip to Arizona.

Besides serving as mayor of Spur, McNeill was instrumental in the White River Muncipal Water District and its work in securing a lake near here. He was also an active member of World Neighbors.

J.R. McNeill married the former Miss Florence Manley in July, 1926. They made their home in Spur. One son, Frank McNeill and one daughter, Mrs. Virginia Jung, Crosbyton survive along with his mother, Mrs. Fannie McNeill, of Spur.

Two brothers, Randolph McNeill, Spur and J.C. McNeill III, Crosbyton, also survive with two grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Jack Rector, Robert McAteer, Jim Barron, W.F. Gilbert, Cliff Bird, Paul Marion, Rob Simmons and Neal Christain. Honorary pallbearers included members of the Spur City Council and directors of the White River Water District.

Interment was in Spur Cemetery. Campbell's Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Services for Florence Manley McNeill of Lubbock, a member of a pioneer Crosby County ranching family, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Sanders Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Carlton Thomson, a retired Methodist minister, officiating.

Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. in Spur Cemetery under direction of Sanders Funeral Home of Lubbock.

Mrs. McNeill died Wednesday, June 30, 1993, at her residence.

She was born in Boise, Idaho, on May 7, 1903. She attended Northwestern University and the University of Illinois, where she received a bachelor's degree in 1925. She married Jordan Reese McNeill on July 27, 1926, in Evanston, Ill., and the couple moved to the McNeill Ranch in Crosby County. Her husband died on Dec. 31, 1959. She earned a master's degree from Texas Tech University in 1951.

She taught school in Spur and Jayton and was a member of the faculty in the Department of English at Texas Tech University until retiring in 1968. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Daughters of the American Revolution and Alpha Kappa Gamma and Sigma Kappa.

Survivors include a son, Frank of St. Charles, Ill.; a daughter, Penny McNeill Jung of Lubbock; a sister, Betty McLean of Evanston, Ill.; five grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

Grandsons will be pallbearers.
