L.B.McMeans Dies Suddenly Thursday Morning

L. B. McMeans, 65, one of the most highly respected citizens of Spur community, died of heart trouble at his home southwest of Spur about 8:30 o'clock last Thursday morning. Mr. McMeans had been in ill health for more than two years, but seemed to be improving until about three weeks before his death at which time he suffered a heart attack. He appeared to be in his usual health Thursday morning and insisted on going with Mrs. McMeans to the lots to attend to some stock. On their return to the house he started to fall and called to his wife to catch him. She eased him down as best she could and ran to the house to phone for a physician. As she returned to him she took some stimulant and tried to revive him, but he was too far gone.

The body was prepared for burial by Campbell's Mortuary and funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Church of Christ. Mike M. Young was in charge of the services and was assisted by Rev. C. R. Joyner of the Baptist church. Interment followed in Spur cemetery with Spencer Campbell in charge of arrangements. Active pallbearers were; Wayne McMeans, Thomas McMeans, Lanis McMeans, of Swenson; T. B. McMeans of Rule, Walter McMeans of Benjamin and Jeff Loe of Lamesa. The first five named were nephews to the deceased. The flower bearers were: Mrs. Wayne McMeans, Mrs. Lanis McMeans, Miss Zelma McMeans, Miss Zenadae McMeans, Miss Virginia Elliott and Mrs. Floyd Barnett.

Honorary pallbearers were: Judge Alton B. Chapman, E. S. Lee, Rex Merriman, W. J. Elliott, C. F. Watters, W. K. Walker, Wallace Hinson, Dave Herbst and Rufus Herbst of Hamlin, G. F. Mullino of Haskell, Ike Dickson of Lorenzo.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs.Una Orr McMeans, one son, L. B. Jr., three daughters, Miss Gladys McMeans, Miss Bonnie McMeans, and Mrs. E. F. Yeakley of California.

Among the out of town relatives and friends were: Mrs. Dave Herbst of Hamlin, Mrs. G. F. Mullino and Mrs. Nettie Henry of Haskell, Mrs. Ike Dickson of Lorenzo, E. S. Orr, T. W. Orr, and W. S. Orr, brothers of Mrs. McMeans, of Hillsboro; Mrs. Minnie Hardy of Perrin, Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Loe of Lamesa, Mrs. Joe McMeans of Swenson, Mrs. Floyd McMeans and children of Rule. Miss Annie Ward and Mrs. Ward Gardner of Swenson.

Mr. McMeans was a cousin to the McArthur boys: Tom, Bill, Jim and Edd, and to Mrs. S. B. Scott and Mrs. L.Scott Of Kalgary.

Mr. McMeans came from a staunch Southern family. His father was a Confederate veteran and enlisted with the South from the state of Tennessee.

Mr. McMeans was born in Hill County June 15, 1872. He moved to Dallas county, then to Bosque County. In 12898 he moved back to Hill County where he married Miss Cora McMeans, she passed away January 8, 1900. Mr. McMeans moved to Stonewall County and in August of 1905 he went back to Hill County and married Miss Una Orr. Three children were born into the home: L. B. Jr., Misses Gladys and Minnie Fae.

Mr.McMeans moved to Rochester where he resided ten years. In 1920 while living at Rochester, he made a profession of Christian religion and became affiliated with the Church of Christ. He lived a devoted Christian life from that time until his death. He was not able to attend church much the last two years, but his sympathy was with the church in all of its work and his life was a benediction to all who came in contact with him.

The family moved to dickens County in January 2922 and established a home about five miles southwest of Spur. It has been the family home since, and its doors have stood open to both neighbors and strangers alike. Mr. McMeans enjoyed his friends very much, and during the last weeks of his illness he wondered why more of them did not go to see him. He wanted to be a good neighbor and made it his policy to tell his neighbor the truth about everything as he saw it. Many people have remarked that if "L. B. McMeans told them anything, that it would be just that way". His standard of life was to be fair with others. He considered a friend his greatest asset in life and to be able to assist a friend gave him more pleasure than anything. His wife has lost a good companion, his children have lost a loving father, his friends have lost a good neighbor, and the community a good citizen.
