Mrs. O.C. McMahan, 70, Passes From Life Friday
Mrs. Obinder C. McMahan, 70 year old pioneer mother, and revered "Grandmother McMahan" to a legion of friends over this area, passed away at 3:10 o'clock Friday morning, February 24, at the family home a few miles north of Spur, expiration following several years of illness.Fate -Ominous to many of us, speaks but kindly to those who have no fear. The Angels recorded another birth to Heaven; nobleness and faith are rewarded - a leased life is returned to ownership, untarnished, alas, brightened by the useful years that have been granted.
Obiner C. Pettijohn was born on the 9th day of November, 1868, in Harrison, Arkansas. There she grew to young womanhood in the family home, under the guidance of respected parent, and in the environment that stamps eternal discipline and honor. On June 9, 1884, in the city of her birth, she walked to the altar of holy wedlock with John R. McMahan. To this union seven children were born, and in the early years of their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. McMahan began a western migration.
Grandmother McMahan, a term lovingly bestowed on her, affiliated herself with the Missionary Baptist Church on April 10, 1909, in Whitesboro, TX; later bringing her membership to Spur when the family moved here in 1919. Of this organization she remained a member until death claimed her.
Funeral services were held here Saturday morning, 11:00 o'clock, in the First Baptist Church, with Rev. W.B. Bennett, assisted by Baptist Pastor R.C. Joyner and J.H. Miles, pastor of the Spur Church of Christ. Interment wasmade in Spur cemetery, Campbell Funeral Home's directors in charge.
Surviving members of the family are five sons: Coy, Riley, Ivy and Charlie McMahan, all of Spur, and Dan, of Coahoma; and one sister, Mrs. Alpha Eoff. The husband, John R. McMahan, died here in 1923, and two daughters preceded Mrs.McMahan in death. Mrs. Lilla Ragsdale passed away July 25, 1929, and Mrs. Ora Gray succumbed to death's call in 1936.
Pallbearers were T.C. Sandlin W.F. Foreman, R.J. Hairgrove, Will Ball, W.E. Armstrong, and Wiley Ball.
Flower girls were Clara Moreland, Hazel Burns, Eula B. McMahan, Elizabeth Powell, and Christine Sandlin.
Supplementing the great throng of local friends and relatives, many out-of-town people attended the funeral services. Among them were Mrs. Alpha Eoff, sister to the deceased; Mrs. Bessie Warden and son, of Norman, OK; Charlie Barbee, Fredrick, OK; Clay Knox, Lubbock; Mr. and Mrs Elmer Moreland, Abilene; and Mr. and Mrs. Justice McMahan of San Antonio.
