Biography

Joe B. Long came to Spur in 1930 and was married in 1932 to Julia Jennings, who was secretary to W.B. Lee at the Spur Security Bank at that time. They have two sons, Joe Bruce and Jennings.

Joe bought an interest in the City Drug Store along with Dr. T.H. Blackwell in 1930, and later, Joe Long, with a co-owner, Jerry Ensey purchased the entire store.

He was past president of the Spur Rotary Club and past W.M. of the Masonic Lodge. He was also a former member of the City Council and Red Cross Chairman for seven years. He was a member of the Board of Deacons of the First Baptist Church.

He was charter director of the South Plains Cotton Growers Association, Inc. for one year.

He graduated from Hardin Simmons University, Abilene, and Duncan school of pharmacy in Dallas.

Obituary

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. in the First Baptist Church here for Joe B. Long, 54, prominent Spur druggist.

Rev. W. L. Kite, former Baptist pastor here, now of Cleburne officiated. He was assisted by Rev Wm. McReynolds of the First Methodist Church.

Mr. Long died about 8:30 a.m. at his home here on Friday, July 5. He had been ill about three years. Born in Hedrick, OK, he first came to Texas in 1915 when he made his home at Ralls. He moved to Spur and Dickens county in 1929.

He began in the drug business by serving as stock clerk in the old Blackwell Drug here. He later purchased the drug store from Dr. T. H. Blackwell. He was the senior partner in the firm with Jerry Ensey, also owning an interest in the firm.

Mr. Long was an active civic worker. He held membership in the Spur Rotary Club and the Masonic Lodge. He also was active in his church, and was a deacon in the First Baptist Church here.

He married the former Julia Jennings on January 17, 1932 in Spur.

Survivors include his wife, two sons, Joe Bruce, Chicago; and Jennings, Spur; his father, Early Long, also survives.

Pallbearers included Jerry Ensey, Floyd Faubus, Neal Chastain, Johnny Nichols, O.L. Kelley, Rex Holder, George Gabriel and A. J. Harvey.

Interment was in the Spur Cemetery.

Julia Long Julia J. Long, widow of Joe B. Long, a long-time resident of Spur and former owner of City Drug Store, died in Los Angeles on November 8, 1995. She was 93 at the time of her death.

Mrs. Long had lived in Los Angeles for the past 17 years and was in relative good health until the time of her death.

She was born on March 17, 1902 in Martindale, Texas, into a family of nine children. Her family moved to Lubbock in 1920 where her father owned a farm. After finishing a degree at Baylor Belton College for Women, Julia taught high school for a year and then became the secretary of Mr. Jones, vice president of Spur Security Bank.

She married Joe Long in 1932, who then worked for Sanders Drug Store. They had two sons, Bruce, who also lives in Loss Angeles and Jennings, who lives in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Mrs. Long was an active member of the Baptist Church in Spur, serving as president of the Women´s Missionary Union and a Sunday School teacher. She also served as organist for the church for many years.

A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church in Spur on Saturday, December 9 at 2 p.m. The Rev. Richard Harbison, church pastor, will officiate. Her son, Bruce Long, will also deliver a brief eulogy. A short graveside service will follow.

Everyone is invited to remain after the graveside service for supper at the Baptist Church.
