Biography

Hobert Lewis was born in Kent County and lived at different times at Dickens and Kent Counties as a child. He served several banks in this arrea from janitor to bookkeeper and on up. He came to the Sur Security Bank in August 1937, and remained with this bank until March of 1947. At this time he left Spur and went to Anton where he organized the Citizens State Bank and was its Executive Officer until January of 1952. From Anton he went to Brownfield and served as President of the First National Bank until May 1954, and at this time returned to Spur and became President of Spur Secrity Bank. Later he sold this interest to Ransom Gallaway and moved to Jayton, he helped establish the Kent County State Bank where he served as president. He has since sold this interest.

He is a graduate of Jayton High School and attended business college Abilene, West Texas State in Canyon and the University of Texas. He is past president of the Spur School Board and Director of the Chamber of Commerce.

Mrs. Lewis was raised in Motley County, and is a graduate of matador High School and T.W.U. in Denton. They have three children, Mrs. William E. Pierce, Charles and Rosalyn Lewis.

Obituary

Graveside services for Hobert Lewis, 92, of Lubbock were Thursday, April 29, 1999 at Spur Memorial cemetery. Rev. Bill Pearce officiated. Services were under the direction of Campbell Funeral Home of Spur.

A Memorial Service was held Friday, April 30, 1999 in Neil Chapel at Carillon Retirement community in Lubbock with Rev. Keith Wiseman officiating.

Mr. Lewis died Tuesday, April 27, 1999 at Lubbock Methodist Hospital. He was born November 1, 1906 in Jayton. He graduated from Jayton High School and attended West Texas A&M and University of Texas at Austin. He married Vennie Dean on July 5, 1930 in Marietta, OK. He worked at banks in Girard, Aspermont, Peacock and Roby. He served as Executive vice-president and first CEO of Citizens State Bank of Anton, 1947-1953; president of First National Bank of Brownfield; President of Spur Security Bank, 1954-1962; he was one of the founders and president of Kent County State Bank in Jayton; CEO of First National Bank in Levelland.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Idalou and a former district lay leader of Brownfield District. He served on the boards of McMurry University in Abilene and Methodist Hospital in Lubbock.

He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of Spur Masonic Lodge, a charter member and former president of Anton Lions Club. A former member of Brownfield Rotary club and former president of Spur Rotary Club.

He was preceded in death by one son, Alexander Lewis, one sister and one brother.

He is survived by his wife of Lubbock; two daughter, Marie Lewis Pearce, Charlotte, North Carolina; Rosalyn Lewis, Nashville, Tennessee; one son, Hobert Charles Lewis, Jayton; one sister, Marine Lewis Meyer, Dallas; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Services for Vennie Dean Lewis, 93, of Lubbock, were at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 8, 1999 at the First United Methodist Church in Spur with Rev. Keith Wiseman and Rev. Larry Burton officiating. Burial was in the Spur Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Campbell Funeral Home.

Lewis died Monday, September 6, 1999 at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock. She was born October 5, 1905 in Magnum, OK (Indian Territory). She graduated from Matador High School. She attended Texas Woman´s University and Sul Ross University. She received her B.A. degree from the University of North Texas. She taught school in Whiteflat and Jayton.

She married Hobert Miles Lewis July 5, 1930 in Marietta, OK. He preceded her in death April 27, 1999. Lewis was a member of First United Methodist church in Idalou. She was a longtime Sunday school teacher and a member of the United Methodist Women. She was active in study clubs, garden clubs and home demonstration clubs.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Ora Fry and one son, Edwin Alexander Lewis.

Survivors include: two daughters, Vennie Marie and William E. Pearce of Charlotte, NC and Rosalyn Lewis of Nashville, TN; one son, Charles and Joyce Lewis of Jayton; one sister, Opal Johnston of Lubbock; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
