Biography

Jewell R. Laine (1888-1961) and Willie Dee Montgomery Laine moved to Spur in January 1910. They were married in Fisher county in May 1907 and had resided in Dickens in 1908 and 1909. J.R. drove a mail hack from Dickens to Guthrie. Their daughter, Clarice, was born in Dickens on April 18, 1909. The Laines were true pioneers in Spur, which was less than three months old at the time of their arrival, and were active in the building of the community. J.R. was a member of the Knights of Pythias. In the early days, he was a volunteer fireman in the "bucket brigade." He was a painter by trade and helped build many homes, school, and churches throughout the county. His Irish wit matched his red hair, and he was well liked by young and old and among all citizens. A special prayer service held by his colored friends during his terminal illness was evidence of his esteem by them. He loved sports - especially hunting, fishing and football. He was happiest when on a camping trip with Boy Scouts or other youth groups. He served as a member of the Official Board of First Methodist Church for many years.

Mrs. Laine taught a Sunday School class in the Children's Department for over 50 years. Her pupils included the first, second, and third generations of some pioneer families. She is a life member of W.S.C.S and is still active in that organization. She proudly boasts that all three of her children and two granddaughters were honor graduates of Spur High School.

Wood.
