Biography

I was born September 4, 1948 in Crosbyton, Texas to Carl and Bobbie Young Grantham who still reside in the Red Hill Community, Dickens County. I was the first born of the fourth generation of Young descendants to live in Red Hill. My great grandparents, Will and Kizzie Young came to Red Hill in 1898, the first settlers to make their home there. My grandfather, Garner Young was born in Red Hill and lived there most of his eighty years. He still lives in Dickens County. My mother was also born there and is still living there.

I started school at Spur in 195 and graduated from Spur High in 1967. I was in 4-H club by the time I was old enough to be. My main project was swine. I raised a lot of quality hogs and won a number of trophies and ribbons at shows. I was Gold Star winner in 1966. This is a very high honor in 4-H Club Work.

I am still interested in agriculture, but have been unable to pursue this as a career.

While I was in high school I had an essay published in "Young America Speaks". I attended Odessa College in 1967-68, then transferred to Texas A&M for the fall semester of 1968. I found I was not prepared for the courses A&M offered, so returned to Odessa for the spring semester of 1969. I transferred to West Texas State University in the fall of 1969 and received a degree in Animal Science in December, 1972.

I have managed a swine farm at Snyder, worked for Lubbock Swine Breeders, returned to Texas Tech for my teacher´s certificate, taught school at Channelview, Texas 2 years, and worked for Brown and Root Contractors since finishing WTSU.

At present, I am working for Brown and Root as a pipefitter in the Houston area. I am in LaPorte, Texas, where I have lived for 9 years. I am a member of the Church of Christ, meeting on Havana Street in Deer Park.

I have two sisters, Kathy, living and working in Lubbock as an account for South Park Medical Center, and Tonette, living and working in Lubbock for Lubbock Diagnostic Lab as a transcriptionist.

I would like to return to Dickens County and go into business for myself, hopefully in the swine business. Maybe, someday this dream will come true.
